Rocket League Fast Aerial: The Input Timing That Beats Every Ground Play

The fast aerial is the mechanic that unlocks Diamond and above. Here is the exact jump-throttle-boost timing, why the double jump is optional, and a Free Play drill to make it automatic.

The fast aerial is the single skill that most separates Gold from Diamond. It lets you reach a ball in the air in about half a second instead of the slow floaty “single jump then boost” most new players do. Here is the technique.

The wrong way (what most people do)

New players do a single jump, wait, then boost straight up. That is slow — the car hangs, loses the race to the ball, and arrives late and uncontrolled. You will miss every 50/50 in the air doing this.

The fast aerial inputs

The goal is to convert your jump into upward momentum immediately using boost:

  1. Jump (press jump once).
  2. Immediately tilt the stick/throttle back (pull down/back) so the nose points up.
  3. Hold boost the instant you leave the ground.

The key is timing: you boost while the jump is still giving you upward velocity, so the boost adds to it instead of fighting gravity from a standstill. Done right, you shoot upward fast and stay controllable.

Do you need the second jump?

Not for a basic fast aerial. The double jump (jump, then jump again) is for a different thing — it adds a flip/redirect at the top. For simply reaching the ball quickly, a single jump + boost is faster and cleaner. Save the second jump for aerial shots and redirects once the fast aerial is automatic.

Air roll to adjust

As you go up, use air roll (or directional air roll) to keep the car’s nose pointed at the ball. Without it you arrive sideways and miss. This is where the camera settings from our camera guide matter — you need to see the ball to adjust.

The Free Play drill

  1. Load Free Play.
  2. Drive under the ball, fast aerial straight up, and try to touch it at the top of your arc.
  3. Repeat until you can hit the ball out of the air 8/10 times without thinking.
  4. Then do it while the ball is moving.

Why it matters: almost every high-rank goal, clear, and save involves beating someone to the air ball. If your fast aerial is slow, you lose those races. Train it until it is muscle memory — it is the fastest rank you will ever buy.
