How to Get Free Items in TF2: The Accurate Achievement Weapon List (2026)
Every legitimate free item in Team Fortress 2 in 2026 — the exact milestone weapons per class, the real drop cadence, the free hats you can still earn, and the crafting math. No trades, no market, no scams.
TF2 gives away more free items than most players ever claim, because the game never tells you what you are missing. The single biggest source is the achievement menu you have probably never opened — and it grants real, permanent unlock weapons, not placeholders.
Below is the verified list. Every weapon here is earned by hitting class achievement milestones and is yours forever. (Sources: Team Fortress Wiki achievement-items list.)
The milestone system
Each class has three Milestone achievements. Hit Milestone 1, 2, and 3 and you get one specific weapon each. Milestones stack — Milestone 2 also counts the achievements from Milestone 1.
The catch is the threshold differs by class:
- 5 / 11 / 17 achievements: Soldier, Demoman, Engineer, Sniper, Spy
- 10 / 16 / 22 achievements: Scout, Pyro, Heavy, Medic
You do not need to do anything special to “equip” them — complete the count and the weapon appears in your backpack. Items earned this way are Unique quality and cannot be traded or sold, which is fine because you got them for free.
Exact achievement weapons by class
| Class | Milestone 1 | Milestone 2 | Milestone 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scout | Force-a-Nature (primary) | Sandman (melee) | Bonk! Atomic Punch (secondary) |
| Soldier | Equalizer (melee) | Direct Hit (primary) | Buff Banner (secondary) |
| Pyro | Flare Gun (secondary) | Backburner (primary) | Axtinguisher (melee) |
| Demoman | Chargin’ Targe (secondary) | Eyelander (melee) | Scottish Resistance (secondary) |
| Heavy | Sandvich (secondary) | Natascha (primary) | Killing Gloves of Boxing (melee) |
| Engineer | Frontier Justice (primary) | Gunslinger (melee) | Wrangler (secondary) |
| Medic | Blutsauger (primary) | Kritzkrieg (secondary) | Übersaw (melee) |
| Sniper | Huntsman (primary) | Jarate (secondary) | Razorback (secondary) |
| Spy | Ambassador (secondary) | Cloak and Dagger (PDA) | Dead Ringer (PDA) |
The ones that quietly carry your early game: the Übersaw (Medic — builds Uber on every stab, the most important Medic unlock), the Kritzkrieg (Medic — free crits on a timer), the Equalizer/Escape Plan family for Soldier, the Eyelander (Demoknight sword), and the Dead Ringer (Spy — fake death escape). If you only do one thing, finish the milestone trees for the two classes you actually play.
Random drops (the slow path)
While you play on a VAC-secured server, TF2 drops items on a timer:
- One item every 30–70 minutes of active play
- Capped at roughly 10–12 weapons per week (a bit more if you have not played in over a week)
- The week resets Thursday morning
- Cosmetic and tool drops only happen if you have a Premium account (any purchase, or a gift, upgrades you from Free)
Drops are free but random. The achievement path above is faster and lets you pick exactly what you want.
Free hats you can still earn
These are not all gone — several are repeatable:
- Ghastly / Ghostly Gibus — dominate a player wearing any achievement Gibus hat and you earn your own.
- Mildly Disturbing Halloween Mask — collect 20 Halloween pumpkins from dead players during Scream Fortress.
- Horseless Headless Horsemann’s Head — kill the Horseless Headless Horsemann during the Halloween event.
- Pyrovision Goggles — dominate a player wearing the Goggles.
- Seasonal event cosmetics — Scream Fortress (Halloween) and summer events still hand out free cosmetics for simple tasks like playing a match on the event map. They return every year with new items.
Crafting (free, using what you own)
The core recipe: two weapons of the same class and slot = one Scrap Metal. Then three Scrap = one Reclaimed Metal, and three Reclaimed = one Refined Metal. Refined is the community’s base currency. You can also combine a Class Token + Slot Token + Scrap to craft a specific class-and-slot weapon you are missing, and two cosmetics (or four Refined + a Class Token) to craft a class hat. Crafting will not make you rich, but it fills loadout gaps for zero cents.
Scams to never touch
If a site asks for your Steam login to “give” you free items, it is phishing — Valve will never ask for your password. Survey sites, “human verification,” and “free Unusual/Australium” videos are all scams. Close them.
The realistic first week
- Day 1: Finish Milestone 1 + 2 for your main class (3–4 weapons).
- Day 2: Same for your secondary class.
- Ongoing: Let drops accumulate while you play normally.
- Every Thursday: The drop counter resets — keep playing to use it.
- Every event: Log in during Scream Fortress / summer events and grab the free cosmetics.
A month of this gives you every unlock weapon you need, a few hats, and a scrap bank — without spending a dollar or trading with a stranger.
The one thing to remember
The biggest free loot in TF2 is the achievement milestone menu: hit 5/11/17 (or 10/16/22) class achievements and the wiki table above becomes your backpack. Open it, pick your main class, and start — the Übersaw, Kritzkrieg, and Equalizer are sitting there unclaimed.
