How to Beat Pyro in TF2: Surviving the Flames
Pyro reflects your rockets, airblasts you off ledges, and burns you after you escape. Here is how to beat Pyro with every TF2 class — range, timing, and the angles that work.
Pyro is the class that beats players who do not understand their own weapons. He reflects rockets, extinguishes your afterburn, pushes you off cliffs, and then kills you with a shotgun you did not expect.
Every Pyro strength is a reaction. He cannot reflect what he does not see coming, he cannot airblast what is already behind him, and he cannot flame you from a range where his flames never reach. The way to beat Pyro is to attack in ways that remove his options.
The universal rules
1. Fight at mid-to-long range. Pyro’s flame range is short — shorter than most players think. A Pyro who has to walk toward you to do anything is a Pyro you can kill before he arrives.
2. Do not fire slow projectiles from his front. Rockets, grenades, and arrows are all reflectable. Fire from his blind side, fire after the reflect is on cooldown, or use weapons he cannot send back.
3. Never fight him on a ledge. The airblast is a free environmental kill anywhere with a pit, a cliff, or a well. If the map has an edge, do not stand near it.
4. Bait the airblast, then commit. A Pyro who airblasts is on cooldown for about a second. Bait it with one shot, sidestep, then fire everything. Every experienced Pyro will use the reflect — the question is whether you are ready for the moment after.
Class by class
Scout: Your hardest matchup among the light classes, but winnable. The Scattergun is not reflectable, and you out-damage him up close. Circle-strafe at his side, never his front, and keep firing. If he airblasts, you are too close to be pushed far — use the moment to empty both barrels. Avoid open mid-range fights where his flames and shotgun both reach you.
Soldier: Never fire a rocket at his front. Instead, use your rockets for mobility: rocket jump to angles he cannot reach, then fire down at him from above or behind. If you must trade at mid-range, aim at his feet so a reflected rocket still does not kill you at full power. The Equalizer punishes his slow speed once you close.
Demoman: Grenades can be reflected, but stickies fired from behind cover cannot be seen coming. Trap the areas he wants to walk through and detonate when he commits. If he reflects your grenades, stop firing pills entirely and switch to the bottle — a melee trade at close range favors your higher health.
Heavy: The minigun is not reflectable, and you out-damage him badly up close. Spin up behind cover, then walk out firing at his body. The danger is the airblast pushing you while you fire, so stay away from ledges and keep the engagement in the open. A Pyro who tries to reflect a spun minigun simply dies.
Sniper: Kill him from a distance he cannot reach. Your rifle is not reflectable, and a fully charged headshot ends him before he closes. The danger is his flanking speed, so check behind you often and pick positions with an escape route. If he pushes, the SMG or melee works at close range, but a scoped rifle from across the map is better.
Spy: Pyro is the classic Spy counter, which is why beating him feels so good. Approach from behind while he is distracted by your teammates, and stab him before the flames reach you. If he spots you and ignites you, get out of the flame range immediately — afterburn will kill you otherwise. The Red-Tape Recorder works on his teleporters if your team is pushing.
Engineer: Your buildings are his target, but he has to walk into your gun to reach them. Wrangle the Sentry when he approaches with the Homewrecker out, and repair while it fires. At mid-range, your Pistol out-ranges his flames, and your shotgun (if unlocked) finishes him before he closes. Never build in an enclosed space where his flames corner you.
Medic: You cannot beat Pyro alone — do not try. Stay behind your damage classes and let them handle him. If he flanks you, use the syringes from behind cover and fall back toward your team; a Pyro who chases a Medic deep into enemy territory is a Pyro who dies.
The one thing to remember
Pyro answers everything you show him. The players he beats are the ones who throw slow projectiles at his front from predictable positions. Change the angle, change the timing, change the range — he has no answer to a Scout at his side or a Sniper across the map.
