TF2 Soldier Roles: Roamer, Pocket, or Support — Which One Are You?
The three ways to play Soldier in casual TF2, what each one does for the team, and how to pick the right one for the map and the matchup.
Most Soldiers play the same way: rocket from mid-range, take duels they should not take, and die alone on the flank. The reason is that Soldier is not one role — it is three, and the best Soldiers switch between them depending on the map, the team composition, and what the enemy is doing.
The three roles are roamer, pocket, and support. They use the same weapons and completely different positioning.
The Roamer
What it is: You play alone, on the flank, and hunt the enemy’s backline.
Where you are: Off the main route. Side doors, upper routes, the area behind the enemy’s spawn. You are never where the enemy team expects a Soldier.
What you do: Jump into the enemy’s Sniper, their Medic, their Engineer. Pick the player whose death breaks their team, kill them, and leave before the response arrives.
Loadout: Rocket Launcher, Shotgun, Escape Plan. Gunboats are optional — the reduced self-damage lets you chain jumps without dying, but the Shotgun is more reliable.
The skill that matters: Rocket jumping and map knowledge. You cannot flank without mobility, and you cannot survive the flank without knowing the health packs.
Play this when: The map has flank routes (2fort, upward, most payload maps), your team has a Medic who is pocketing someone else, and the enemy team has high-value targets on the backline.
The Pocket
What it is: You follow a Medic and stay glued to them, protecting them and pushing with them.
Where you are: Directly next to your Medic, always. Not in front — they need to see you to heal you. Not behind — you need to see the threat.
What you do: Walk into the enemy team with your Medic and win the fight with combined health. You are the wall the enemy has to break through to reach the Medic.
Loadout: Rocket Launcher, Shotgun, Escape Plan or Disciplinary Action. The Disciplinary Action’s speed boost on teammate hit makes the whole push faster.
The skill that matters: Positioning and discipline. You never leave your Medic, you never chase, and you never take a fight you cannot win with 450 effective health.
Play this when: Your team has a Medic who is looking for a pocket, the map is chokepoint-heavy (badwater, dustbowl), and the enemy team is running a heavy push.
The Support Soldier
What it is: You stay near the team, spam the chokepoint, and control space rather than hunting kills.
Where you are: Mid-range, behind your team’s front line, firing at whatever comes through the choke.
What you do: Area denial. Your rockets do not need to hit anyone directly — splash damage into a chokepoint stops pushes, and your presence alone keeps enemies from advancing.
Loadout: Rocket Launcher, Shotgun, any melee. The Direct Hit has a place here on long-sightline maps, where direct damage into a chokepoint matters more than splash.
The skill that matters: Prediction. You are firing at positions, not players. Learn where the enemy team will appear and put rockets there.
Play this when: Your team already has a roamer and a pocket, the map is defense-heavy, and the enemy team is grouped up.
How to pick
The question is not which role is best. It is which role your team needs right now:
- No Medic on your team? Roamer. Nobody is going to heal you, so play the role that does not depend on a pocket.
- A Medic looking for someone to pocket? Pocket. It is the most powerful role in the game, and it is available to whoever accepts it first.
- Two Soldiers already? Support. The third Soldier’s job is controlling the space the other two fight in.
The mistakes that kill each role
Roamer: Chasing. You get one pick, not a chase. A Scout who runs away is faster, and a Soldier who chases is a Soldier who dies alone.
Pocket: Leaving. The moment your Medic is alone, the enemy team knows, and the next thirty seconds are a disaster. Stay.
Support: Pushing too far. Your rockets work from mid-range. Walk forward and you are in Scout range, where your rocket splash does less and their Scattergun does more.
The one thing to remember
Soldier is a role before it is a weapon. Pick the role your team needs, play the positioning that role demands, and stop taking the duels that belong to someone else. The best Soldiers on casual servers are not the ones with the best aim — they are the ones who are always in the right place with the right job.
