The Strongest Loadout for Every Class in TF2 (2026)
One default loadout per class that wins the most fights, with the exact named weapons and the reason each pick beats the alternatives — plus the swap you make when the enemy team forces your hand.
There is no single strongest loadout — but there is a strongest default for each class: the setup that wins the most fights across the most maps. Below is the default, the reasoning, and the one swap that matters. All weapons here are earnable free via achievements or drops (see the free-items guide).
Scout — stock-plus
- Scattergun (stock) · Pistol (stock) · Bat (stock)
- The Scattergun is the best close-range shotgun in the game; nothing beats it at point blank. The Pistol gives you ranged poke when you cannot close. Keep the Bat until you earn the Sandman (Milestone 2) — its slowdown ball lets you freeze a target and confirm the kill. Swap the Bat → Sandman once you have it.
Soldier — the flexible default
- Rocket Launcher (stock) · Shotgun (stock) · Shovel (stock)
- The stock Rocket Launcher’s splash is the most reliable damage in TF2. The Shotgun cleans up what the rocket does not. For mobility, learn to rocket jump (see the Market Gardener guide) and consider Gunboats (–60% jump self-damage) in the secondary. The Direct Hit (Milestone 2) is a straight upgrade if you land direct hits consistently — faster rocket, mini-crits on direct.
Pyro — the combo
- Flame Thrower (stock) · Flare Gun (Milestone 1) · Axtinguisher (Milestone 3)
- The Flare Gun is the key unlock: it crits a burning target, so the loop is ignite with the primary, Flare Gun for the crit finish. The Axtinguisher (Milestone 3) also crits burning enemies in melee. The Backburner (Milestone 2) trades the airblast for more damage from behind — only if you never airblast (you should). Keep the stock Flamethrower; its airblast is too valuable to drop.
Demoman — pipes and stickies
- Grenade Launcher (stock) · Stickybomb Launcher (stock) · Bottle (stock)
- Stock pipes + stickies is the highest raw damage in the game. The Chargin’ Targe (Milestone 1) + a sword turns you into a demoknight (shield charge + melee), but that is a different role — keep pipes/stickies as default. The Scottish Resistance (Milestone 3) lets you lay more stickies at once for traps; the Eyelander (Milestone 2) is the demoknight sword.
Heavy — sustained fire
- Minigun (stock) · Sandvich (Milestone 1) · Fists (stock)
- The stock Minigun out-sustains everything. The Sandvich (Milestone 1) is mandatory — throw it to a teammate or eat it to heal mid-fight. The Natascha (Milestone 2) slows targets but spins up slower; keep stock unless you want the chase tool. The Killing Gloves of Boxing (Milestone 3) give a speed boost after a kill.
Engineer — the nest
- Shotgun (stock) · Pistol (stock) · Wrench (stock) · buildings: Sentry, Dispenser, Teleporter
- Stock is correct. The Frontier Justice (Milestone 1) rewards Sentry kills with crits on your shotgun. The Gunslinger (Milestone 2) gives a stronger mini-Sentry for aggressive play; the Wrangler (Milestone 3) lets you manually control the Sentry. Default to the stock Sentry + Wrangler once earned.
Medic — the healer who wins fights
- Syringe Gun (stock) · Medi Gun (stock) · Bonesaw (stock)
- The stock Medi Gun’s Ubercharge is the single most important ability in TF2. The Kritzkrieg (Milestone 2) trades invulnerability Uber for a crits Uber — higher damage, no protection; use it when your team already has an escape. The Übersaw (Milestone 3) builds Uber on every stab — the best Medic unlock, equip it always. The Blutsauger (Milestone 1) gives lifesteal on hit at the cost of heal output; skip it for team play.
Sniper — the pick
- Sniper Rifle (stock) · SMG (stock) · Kukri (stock)
- Stock Sniper Rifle headshots are the win condition. The Huntsman (Milestone 1) is a bow — no scope, harder, but fun and strong up close. The Jarate (Milestone 2) is a throwable that makes enemies take mini-crits — combo it with the SMG or a headshot. The Razorback (Milestone 3) blocks one backstab; take it vs Spy-heavy teams, otherwise keep the stock SMG.
Spy — the pick artist
- Revolver (stock) · Knife (stock) · Invis Watch (stock)
- Stock is strong. The Ambassador (Milestone 1) headshots at range for picks. The Cloak and Dagger (Milestone 2) gives infinite cloak while standing still — best for camping a flank. The Dead Ringer (Milestone 3) fakes your death on hit — the best survival tool vs trigger-happy teams. Pick the watch based on whether you need stealth (Cloak and Dagger) or escape (Dead Ringer).
The one thing to remember
Learn each class’s stock-plus default first — every stock weapon is viable, and the milestone unlocks above are free. Equip the Übersaw on Medic, the Flare Gun on Pyro, and the Sandvich on Heavy the moment you earn them; those three change how the class plays.
