Rocket League Hitboxes: The Only Car Stat That Matters
Understand the six Rocket League hitboxes — Octane, Dominus, Hybrid, Breakout, Plank, Merc — with sizes and which one beginners should pick first.
Here’s the thing nobody tells you on day one: every car in Rocket League moves at the same speed, uses the same boost, and turns the same. The only thing that changes how your car plays is its hitbox — the invisible box that actually touches the ball. Pick the wrong one and your touches feel floaty or weird for a reason you can’t name.
The Six Hitboxes
| Hitbox | Length | Width | Height | Best at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Octane | 118.0 | 84.2 | 36.2 | Everything |
| Dominus | 127.9 | 83.3 | 31.3 | Flicks, power shots |
| Hybrid | 127.0 | 82.2 | 34.2 | Balanced |
| Breakout | 131.5 | 80.5 | 30.3 | Precision, pinches |
| Plank | 128.8 | 84.7 | 29.4 | Ceiling shots, ground flicks |
| Merc | 120.7 | 76.7 | 41.7 | Disruption, 50/50s |
Those numbers are the game’s internal units, but what matters is the shape. Octane is short and tall, so it wins 50/50s and is easy to dribble with. Dominus and Plank are long and flat — great for flicks and power, weaker in head-on challenges. Merc is a brick: tallest by far, brilliant for bumps and blocks, awkward for finesse.
Which One Should You Pick?
Start on the Octane. It’s the free default, the most forgiving, and used at every rank. If you want cleaner visual feedback, grab the Fennec — same hitbox, boxier model that lines up with the collision box. The Dominus is a strong second pick once you lean into flicks and ground play.
Don’t fall for the “this car is meta” trap early. Pick one hitbox and stick with it for at least 100 games — muscle memory beats a half-percent stat edge every time. A quick test: load Free Play, dribble the ball on your roof, and see which car feels like it “holds” the ball. The one that clicks is your main.
Pair your choice with a solid camera setup so you can actually see the ball, and you’re set. The hitbox doesn’t make you better; knowing your car’s edges does. For where to take your training next, check the training routine.
