Rocket League Trading Guide: The Trade-In System, Rules, and How to Avoid Scams

Player-to-player trading is gone. This guide covers the current Rocket League Trade-In system, what's eligible, what's locked, and the scam patterns you still need to avoid.

First, the big misconception, because half the “trading guides” online are three years out of date: player-to-player trading was removed in December 2023. No trade window, no middleman, no trading Discord. What’s left is the Trade-In system.

How Trade-In works

  • You trade in five items of the same rarity for one random item of the next rarity up.
  • The ladder: 5 Uncommon → 1 Rare → 5 Rare → 1 Very Rare → 5 Very Rare → 1 Import → 5 Imports → 1 Exotic → 5 Exotics → 1 Black Market.
  • The five inputs are consumed permanently. Trade-ins are not reversible, and support won’t undo them.

Find it in Garage → Trade-In. Eligible items are sorted into three categories — Core Items, Tournament Items, and Blueprints — organized by rarity, with a counter showing how many trade-ins you can make.

The rules that matter

  • Stay within a category. Core trades into core, tournament into tournament, blueprints into blueprints.
  • Duplicates only. Paint matters: an unpainted copy and a Black-painted copy are different versions — neither counts as a duplicate. Certification is looser: a Certified and non-Certified copy can count.
  • Favorited items are hidden. If something eligible doesn’t show up, check whether it’s favorited. Archived items are NOT protected — only favoriting keeps something out of the menu.
  • Mixing series splits your odds. Three blueprints from one series plus two from another gives roughly a 60/40 shot at each series. Keep five from one series together to target that pool.
  • New in Season 24: Black Market Trade-In. Three duplicate Black Market items can be exchanged for a new same-tier item or a painted version you don’t own yet.

What can’t be traded in

  • The Item Shop (anything bought with Credits)
  • The Esports Shop
  • Rocket Pass premium rewards, Event Stores, Fan Rewards, Bonus Gifts, Golden items

Some free drops also arrive trade-locked for a while. The Trade-In menu shows what’s eligible — when in doubt, just look.

The scam checklist

With player-to-player trading gone, the scams moved elsewhere. Still very much alive:

  • “Free Credits” generators and code sites. They don’t exist. Every one wants your Epic login or personal data. No legitimate code has ever granted Credits.
  • Phishing Discord links and fake giveaway bots. Official giveaways never ask for your password or 2FA codes. Real prizes land in your inventory automatically.
  • Account trading sites. Against the terms, unrecoverable when they go wrong, and the fastest way to lose your whole inventory.
  • Real-money item deals outside official channels. No protection, no recourse.

Rule of thumb: if a deal requires you to leave the game, log in somewhere, or send anything first, it’s a scam.

Trade in vs. keep

Don’t blindly feed everything up the ladder. Keep what you’ll equip; trade genuine duplicates. For blueprints, weigh trade-in against build cost first — the blueprints guide breaks down when building wins.

Bottom line: Trade-In is a decluttering tool with a lottery ticket attached. Use it on duplicates, respect the category rules, and never trust anything outside the game client.
