How to Beat Sniper in TF2: Closing the Distance Safely
Snipers are deleting your team from across the map. Here is how to beat a Sniper with every class — the routes to take, the mistakes to avoid, and when to just ignore him.
A good Sniper changes how a whole team plays. Your Heavies stop holding the open ground, your Medics stop crossing the courtyard, and the match grinds to a halt.
The counterplay depends on your class, but the principle never changes: never cross his sightline predictably.
The universal rules
1. Do not peek the same angle twice. A Sniper who hit you once is aiming at the same spot. If you die at a corner, do not walk back to that corner.
2. Break his line of sight. Every Sniper position has cover nearby. Use it. The fight is not “kill the Sniper” — it is “reach the Sniper without dying.”
3. Move unpredictably. Strafing, jumping, and changing direction make you hard to hit. Snipers lead their targets, and erratic movement breaks the lead.
4. Watch the charge sound. A scoped Sniper’s rifle charges with a rising whine. If you hear it, you are in his line — move.
Class by class
Scout: Your job. Take a flank route, stay off his sightlines, and close the distance. A double jump toward him, then two Scattergun shots. Do not cross the open ground he is watching — go around.
Soldier: Rocket jump to an angle he cannot cover. A Sniper looking at the ground level cannot hit you if you arrive from a rooftop. Even without perfect jumping, arc rockets over cover toward his position and force him to move.
Spy: Decloak behind him. Scoped Snipers cannot turn around. This is your second-easiest target after a distracted Medic.
Pyro: Flank and burn. The flamethrower kills a Sniper in about a second at close range, and he cannot quickscope fast enough to stop you. Just do not cross his sightline getting there.
Demoman: Grenades arc over his cover and force him to reposition. You rarely kill him outright, but a Sniper who keeps moving is a Sniper who is not killing your team. Sticky traps on common angles work too.
Heavy: You cannot beat a Sniper directly. Stay out of his sightlines, push with your team, and let a Scout or Spy handle him. If you must cross, do it while someone else distracts him.
Medic: Your job is survival. Stay behind cover while healing, and never stand in the open to reach a patient. If your pocket needs healing badly enough to risk a sightline, pop ÜberCharge first.
Engineer: A Sentry on his angle makes him reposition. Build forward so his position becomes worthless, and let the buildings do the fighting.
Sniper: The mirror match. Whoever fires first usually wins. After you shoot, move immediately so his counter-shot misses. Quickscoping wins these duels more often than full charges.
What not to do
- Do not challenge him at his range. His rifle out-damages everything at distance. The fight you want is close.
- Do not stand still after being hit. If you survive a bodyshot, the next shot is a headshot. Run behind cover.
- Do not send the whole team. One player dying at a time teaches the Sniper your routes. Send one player, or send a Scout.
- Do not ignore him forever. A dominant Sniper eventually controls the whole map. If nobody on your team can deal with him, you lose slowly.
When to just ignore him
Not every Sniper is worth the effort. If he is missing shots, or only hitting bodyshots, he is not a real threat and your time is better spent on the objective.
If he is hitting headshots consistently — especially on your Heavies and Medics — he is the priority target. Ask in chat. Someone will switch.
The one-sentence version
Do not fight the Sniper where he is strong. Go around, close the distance, and make him fight a class that beats him at close range.
