How to Beat Every Class as Spy in TF2

The full Spy matchup chart — how to approach, kill, and escape from all nine classes, including the Pyro and Scout matchups that end most Spy careers.

Spy is not a class you play. It is a set of nine different problems, one per enemy class, and the solution to each one is different. The Spy who tries to backstab a Pyro the same way he backstabs a Heavy dies. The Spy who learns the nine approaches wins games without firing a shot.

This guide is the full chart. For each class: how they kill you, how you kill them, and when you should not try.

Scout

How he kills you: He is faster than your decloak, and his Scattergun kills you at close range before your revolver can answer.

Your approach: Decloak from behind while he is fighting something else — a Scout who is engaged is not looking around. If he spots you, do not fight: cloak and run.

The kill: Backstab when he is stationary (capping, reloading, distracted). The Ambassador headshot works from mid-range if you are confident. Never melee-fight him — his Bat swings faster than your knife.

Soldier

How he kills you: Rockets splash you from angles you cannot see, and he turns around when he hears your decloak.

Your approach: From behind, while he is firing. Every rocket he fires is a second he is not looking at you.

The kill: Backstab. He is slow to turn and his rockets are aimed forward. If he spots you, his shotgun is dangerous at close range — back off and re-cloak.

Pyro

How he kills you: He sees through your disguise, ignites you, and airblasts you off the cliff you were about to use. Pyro is the hardest matchup in the game.

Your approach: Do not disguise against a Pyro — he will check you. Cloak from behind while he is distracted by your teammates, and stab immediately. The window between his flame check and his next one is your entire opportunity.

The kill: Backstab from behind. If he ignites you, run — afterburn kills you while your cloak is down. Never fight a Pyro head-on with the revolver.

Demoman

How he kills you: Sticky traps you cannot see, and grenades that splash you from behind cover.

Your approach: Watch for his sticky traps — they are visible once you know the shape. Approach from an angle where his stickies are not looking.

The kill: Backstab while he is placing traps. He is focused on the ground, not on his back. If he has a razorback, your first stab breaks it — shoot him once with the revolver, then finish.

Heavy

How he kills you: 300 health, a minigun that tracks you, and a Medic behind him.

Your approach: Behind, always. Heavies never turn around unless a Spy has taught them to, and the ones who have are usually alone.

The kill: Backstab. A full-charge Heavy with a Medic is not a target — wait until the Medic is dead or distracted. If you are caught, your revolver does not out-DPS his minigun. Run.

Engineer

How he kills you: His Sentry shoots you mid-cloak, and his Wrench hits harder than you expect.

Your approach: Destroy his buildings first. Sap the Sentry, then approach the Engineer. Never decloak in front of a Sentry — it tracks you through the cloak.

The kill: Sap, backstab. If he is wrangling, wait for the shield to drop. The Red-Tape Recorder is the best sapper against a defended nest.

Medic

How he kills you: He cannot kill you alone — but his pocket can, and he will call for help.

Your approach: Wait for the moment the pocket is reloading or distracted. Then decloak behind the Medic.

The kill: Backstab. The best target in the game, because killing the Medic first turns his pocket into a normal fight your team wins.

Sniper

How he kills you: One bodyshot kills you, and he is watching the flank you need.

Your approach: Cloak from a different angle than the one he is scoped on. Approach from behind cover, not from open ground.

The kill: Backstab. If he spots you while you are cloaked, his SMG can still kill you — break line of sight immediately. The Shahanshah Sniper at low health is dangerous in a knife fight; shoot him instead.

Spy

How he kills you: He stabs you first, or you stab each other at the same time.

Your approach: Decloak behind him while he is decloaking behind you. The mirror matchup is a coin flip that favors whoever committed second.

The kill: Backstab. If you see each other, run — fighting another Spy with revolvers is a waste of both players’ time.

The escape rules

Every Spy death happens in one of three places, and all three are avoidable:

After the stab. You are visible for a moment after every kill. Move immediately — do not watch the body fall.

Against a group. One enemy is a target. Two enemies are a retreat. Three is a cloaked escape, and the escape has to start before you are seen.

On the objective. Capping makes you visible to everyone nearby. Stab, then leave the point before the response arrives.

The one thing to remember

Spy is a targeting exercise, not a shooting one. Pick the player whose death matters most — the Medic, the Engineer, the Sniper — and approach that player the way that specific class demands. The moment you stop treating all nine classes the same, you start winning the games you used to throw.
