TF2 Spy: The Best Loadout for Beginners and Beyond
Revolver, Ambassador, or L'Etranger? Knife or Your Eternal Reward? The best Spy loadout for 2026, and why the stock Knife beats every unlock.
Spy has more loadout variety than any class and the highest failure rate of any loadout. Most Spy unlocks solve problems you do not have yet, and the stock weapons solve the problems you do have: killing from behind, killing from range when the stab fails, and staying cloaked long enough to get there.
The default: Revolver, Red-Tape Recorder, Knife
Primary: Revolver. Not the Ambassador. Not the L’Etranger. The stock Revolver, and here is why: the Ambassador rewards headshots, and hitting headshots as a Spy means you are already exposed and probably dead. The Revolver fires fast, does consistent damage, and punishes the classes that counter you — Pyros who spot you, Snipers who body-shot you while cloaked, and Scouts who chase you.
The Ambassador has a place: it one-shots Scouts and Snipers with a headshot, which covers your two worst matchups. But it is inaccurate at range, slow between shots, and teaches bad habits. Learn the Revolver first, then add the Ambassador when you can consistently land its headshots.
The L’Etranger’s cloak-on-hit is a mobility tool for players who know exactly where they are going. As a default, it is a trap — you will get the cloak refill in fights you should have won with damage.
Secondary: Red-Tape Recorder. The sapper choice matters more than new Spies think. The stock Sapper destroys a building; the Red-Tape Recorder reverses its upgrades. Reversing a level 3 Sentry takes it down to level 1, and the Engineer has to spend forty-five seconds upgrading it back. That wastes more of his time than a destroyed building, because a destroyed Sentry can be rebuilt while you are still on the map.
The Ap-Sap’s instant teleport destruction is for aggressive play. The Snack Attack is a joke. The Red-Tape Recorder is the strongest general-purpose sapper.
Melee: Knife. No contest. Every melee unlock trades something — the Your Eternal Reward trades the disguise kit, the Conniver’s Kunai trades health for overheal, the YER and the Big Earner trade damage for utility. The Knife does 195 damage from behind and kills everything in the game. Nothing else you equip does that.
The one exception: the YER (Your Eternal Reward) on maps with heavy Sentry presence, where disguising immediately after a stab chain keeps you alive. That is a specific strategy, not a default.
The loadouts to avoid as a beginner
The full Ambassador loadout. New Spies see headshot compilations and think the Ambassador is the class. It is not. You will miss the headshots, you will die at mid-range, and you will never learn to use the Revolver.
The invisible Spy. Cloak and Dagger plus the L’Etranger plus the YER. You will be invisible, useless, and dead the moment a Pyro walks by.
The aggressive Spy. Dead Ringer plus YER plus Conniver’s Kunai. This is a high-level playstyle that requires map knowledge and enemy-reading ability you do not have yet. It will get you killed.
The watch choice
The default Invis Watch is the right choice. The Cloak and Dagger’s standing still is a death sentence in casual play, and the Dead Ringer’s fake death is a tool for escaping — which you should not need if you are stabbing correctly.
The Dead Ringer has a real use: attacking through a defended chokepoint where you cannot avoid taking damage. Fake your death, let the enemy team relax, then stab. But that is an advanced technique that requires timing.
The one thing to remember
Revolver, Red-Tape Recorder, Knife. The stock loadout wins because it covers every situation: the Knife kills anything from behind, the Revolver answers every class that spots you, and the Red-Tape Recorder wastes more Engineer time than any other sapper. Learn these three, and the unlocks become options instead of crutches.
