Ancestor Modules Guide: The Best Mods in The First Descendant
Ancestor Modules are the strongest modules in The First Descendant — and the hardest to farm. Here is where they come from, how to roll them, and which ones to keep.
Ancestor Modules are the top tier of modules in The First Descendant. They come from the hardest content, they roll random stats, and they are the difference between a good build and a top-tier one.
They are also the most misunderstood part of the endgame. This guide covers where they come from, how the rolling works, and how to avoid wasting them.
What Ancestor Modules are
Ancestor Modules are the highest-tier modules in the game. They drop from specific endgame content, and each one has:
A base type — the module’s category, which determines what slot it goes in and what kind of effect it can carry.
Random rolled options — the specific stats, rolled when the module drops. Two Ancestor Modules of the same type can roll completely different effects.
An option tier — the quality of the rolled options. Higher tiers roll better stats, and the best content guarantees higher tiers.
Where they come from
The Mega Dungeon. Karel’s Mothership is the primary source. It drops Ancestor Module Loot on every completion, and the Hard difficulty raises the option tier.
Onslaught Stage 5. The current endgame wave mode. It guarantees an Ancestor Module with at least one Transcendent-tier option on its weekly reward, and the higher stages raise the guaranteed tier further.
Trials. The roguelite mode drops module loot from its legion encounters, and the daily dungeon rotation means different legsions drop different loot pools.
The weekly rewards. Every week, the weekly content guarantees at least one Ancestor Module with a good option tier. This is the floor — the content you cannot skip.
The rolling system
Ancestor Modules roll their options when they drop. The roll determines everything:
The option tier. Higher tiers mean better stat values. The hardest content guarantees higher tiers — Onslaught Stage 5’s weekly reward guarantees at least one Transcendent-tier option.
The specific stats. The rolled options are random within the module type’s pool. A module that rolls the stats your build wants is worth several that do not.
The alignment devices. Re-rolling an Ancestor Module’s options takes alignment devices — rare materials from the same content. You can re-roll a module’s options, but the materials are expensive enough that re-rolling everything is impossible.
How to farm them efficiently
Run the highest difficulty you can clear. The option tier scales with difficulty. A Hard clear that takes five minutes beats three Normal clears that take three.
Do the weekly first. The guaranteed weekly Ancestor Module is the highest-value single reward in the game. Do it before anything else.
Do not re-roll early. A module with one good option and two mediocre ones is still a strong module. Re-roll only when the module is a core part of the build.
Keep everything until you know. A module that rolls badly for your current build might be perfect for your next one. The dismantle button is permanent.
Which ones to keep
Keep:
- Any module that rolls the stat your build needs at a high tier
- Any module with a Transcendent-tier option, even if the other options are weak
- Modules for the slots your builds use most
Dismantle (eventually):
- Modules whose options are all low tier and irrelevant to every build
- Duplicates of modules you have already maxed
The rule: When in doubt, keep it. The materials from dismantling are replaceable; the good roll is not.
The alignment devices
Re-rolling takes alignment devices:
Rare alignment devices — the common re-roll currency, from the same content as the modules.
Ultimate alignment devices — the rare version, used for the highest-tier re-rolls.
The drop rates: The endgame content drops them at low rates — roughly a quarter to an eighth of module loot drops are alignment devices. They are the bottleneck on re-rolling, which is why re-rolling everything is impossible and re-rolling deliberately is correct.
The one thing to remember
Ancestor Modules are rolled when they drop, the roll is everything, and the hardest content rolls the best. Run the highest difficulty you can clear, do the weekly guarantee, keep the good rolls, and re-roll only the modules your build actually depends on.
