The 12 Mistakes That Hold Back New First Descendant Players
The habits that waste materials and slow progression in The First Descendant — and the fixes that get you to endgame without the wasted weeks.
The First Descendant is generous with loot and brutal with materials. The players who progress fastest are not the ones who play the most — they are the ones who avoided the twelve mistakes below.
Each one is fixable this week, and none of them require more playtime.
The material mistakes
1. Spending materials on everything
Every Descendant, weapon, and mod needs unique research materials, and the supply is limited. New players spread them across five projects and finish none.
The fix: One research project at a time. Queue the rest. A finished project is worth more than five started ones.
2. Chasing Transcendent Weapons too early
The golden-border ultimate weapons are the endgame chase, and they require materials from content you cannot run yet. Starting the farm early just burns materials on a weapon you cannot finish.
The fix: Transcendent Weapons after your main is fully leveled and modded. Not before.
3. Dismantling mods you will need
The dismantle button is fast, and new players dismantle everything that is not an immediate upgrade. Then the build guide says “you need exactly that mod.”
The fix: Keep every mod until you know what it does. The inventory space is not the problem — the missing mod is.
4. Ignoring the inspect menu
Every material in the game can be inspected to show its source. New players guess where to farm things and waste days.
The fix: Hover the material, press inspect, read where it comes from. The game tells you — most players never ask.
The build mistakes
5. Leveling a weapon you will replace
Weapon Proficiency is per-weapon. Leveling a transitional weapon to cap is XP you will never get back.
The fix: Level only the weapon your current build uses. When you switch, the old one was not wasted — but the next one should not be.
6. Modding for damage only
New players stack damage mods and ignore everything else. Then they die in the content that requires survivability, or they cannot clear the content that requires utility.
The fix: Balance the build. Damage, survivability, and the utility your Descendant’s skills need. The strongest builds have all three.
7. Ignoring the Descendant’s passive
Every Descendant has a passive that defines their playstyle, and the best builds are built around it. New players build around the active skills only.
The fix: Read the passive first, then build. The passive is the character.
8. Copying builds without the mods
A build guide assumes specific mods at specific levels. Copying the build without the mods gives you a fraction of the damage.
The fix: Build toward the guide, not all at once. Get the core mods first, then optimize.
The progression mistakes
9. Skipping weeklies
The weekly content pays the most XP and the best materials in the game. Skipping a week is a week of progression gone.
The fix: Weeklies on reset day, before anything else. Every week, no exceptions.
10. Not using boosters
The game hands out XP and drop boosters constantly, and new players save them forever.
The fix: Use them on reset day when you are running the most content. A booster in the inventory is worth nothing.
11. Solo content that needs a team
Some content is balanced for four players, and soloing it is a wall. New players throw themselves at it for hours.
The fix: Use matchmaking. The game has public operations for a reason — the hardest content is designed for co-op.
12. Grinding before understanding
The single biggest mistake: farming content whose rewards you cannot use yet, for materials you do not understand, for a system you have not unlocked.
The fix: The story first, then endgame, then the deep systems — in that order. The game is long. There is no bonus for being lost early.
The one thing to remember
One project at a time, Transcendent Weapons last, weeklies on reset day, and read the inspect menu before you farm anything. The First Descendant punishes scattered effort and rewards focus — fix the material habits first and the rest of the game opens up.
