Battlefield 6 Area 51 Map Guide: Desert Base, Crater and Underground Facility

Area 51 is Battlefield 6's Season 5 desert map — tanks and jets on top, tight corridors below. Airspace, armor lanes, the crater and how to attack it.

Area 51 is the second map from Season 5’s launch day, and it’s the opposite of its Vegas sibling: a huge desert military installation with long sightlines on top and a hidden facility underneath. Dice gave it dirt bikes, a destructible air traffic control tower, and a crater that drops into underground rooms and narrow corridors.

Mode fit

Conquest is the main event — the map is built for combined arms with infantry, ground vehicles and aircraft all fighting at once. Breakthrough works too, though the open ground makes attacker pushes expensive. This is the map where a squad without an Engineer genuinely loses.

Three layers of space

  • Air: the busiest layer. Jets and helicopters fight over a big, open sky with very little to hide behind.
  • Ground: desert flats, the base perimeter and the runway areas. Long sightlines everywhere; armor and snipers rule it.
  • Underground: the crater leads down into a facility of tight corridors and rooms. Completely different gunfight — short-range builds only down there.

Players who swap layers at the right time are the ones who survive. When air and armor own the surface, go underground. When the tunnels get mined and camped, go back up.

Key objectives

Objectives straddle the surface and the facility. The rhythm is predictable in a useful way: the outer points get traded while the fight for the crater mouth decides the map. The ATC tower is destructible, so a landmark you use for navigation in one round may be rubble in the next.

Vehicle lanes

Open desert means tanks can actually maneuver, and dirt bikes let a squad cross ground that would otherwise take a minute of running. Armor should use the terrain folds and base structures as cover rather than sitting in the open. Air is the hard counter to a tank that pushes too far — see the jet guide and tank guide.

Attacking

Cross the open ground in a vehicle or under smoke; walking it feeds the snipers on the ridges. Send one squad through the crater to hit the facility from below while the rest apply pressure on the surface — a two-layer attack is very hard to defend. Dirt bikes are the fastest way to get a beacon behind the base.

Defending

Hold the facility entrances and the buildings near the flags, and keep a Recon watching the desert approaches. Mine the crater routes or the underground push will beat you. As of Season 5, the destructible ATC tower also removes a lot of overwatch, so don’t build your defense around one piece of high ground.

Class and loadout notes

Engineer is mandatory — repairing friendly armor is worth more here than a kill streak. Recon for the long lanes, Assault for the corridors underground. See the classes guide. Other open vehicle maps: Mirak Valley and Blackwell Fields.
