Helldivers 2 Mission Prep: The Sixty Seconds Before You Drop

Faction, mission type, modifiers and squad roles decide the loadout. A short checklist that stops the 'we brought the wrong kit' mission.

The four things to read

The faction. Bugs, bots, or Illuminate decide whether you need volume, penetration, or shield-breaking. A loadout built for one is wrong for the others — the difference is covered in the Terminid and Automaton guides. The mission type. Defence wants sentries and barrages; objective running wants mobility. Bringing a defensive build to a running mission is the most common single mistake. The modifiers. Operation modifiers change rules — stratagem availability, enemy behaviour, environmental effects. Reading them is free and skipping them is how squads arrive without the tool the mission assumes. The squad. Four players have sixteen stratagem slots between them. If everyone brings anti-armour, nobody has area denial.

The checklist

  1. Faction read? Then primary and support weapon chosen.
  2. Mission type read? Then stratagems chosen for movement or defence.
  3. Modifiers read? Then any restriction accounted for.
  4. Role agreed? Then say it out loud: “I have anti-armour.”
  5. Armour passive matched to the plan? Then drop. Five questions, and the fourth is the one that random groups skip. It costs one sentence and it is the difference between a squad with four answers and four squads of one.

Why this beats practice

A player with an average build and a correct role outperforms a player with an excellent build in the wrong slot. That is not a motivational statement, it is what the mission structure rewards: the threats are designed to require different tools, so the squad that covers the spread wins. The squad roles page covers the split, and the stratagem loadout page covers what each role should actually carry.

After the drop

The briefing stops mattering and the map starts. From there the priorities are the ones in the side objectives page: clear the things that limit your stratagems, loot on the way out, and leave before the extraction becomes a fight you did not plan for.
