War Thunder Spawn Protection: The Window After You Spawn
Fresh spawns get a short invulnerability window. Learn what spawn protection covers, how long you can lean on it, and how to spend those seconds.
Every time you enter a battle, the game gives you a few seconds of protection. During that window your vehicle cannot be damaged, and in most modes you cannot fire either. It exists to stop spawn-camping — the practice of parking an enemy on the spawn point to delete vehicles the instant they appear — and it is one of the few systems in War Thunder designed purely in the player’s favor.
What spawn protection does
The window is short: seconds, not minutes, and its exact length can differ between modes and vehicles, so plan around what the protection lets you do rather than how long it lasts. Three properties matter more than the duration:
- It is a grace period, not a shield. The protection ends the moment you start fighting, or on its own after a few seconds. Either way, it will not carry you into an engagement.
- It does not travel with you. Staying inside the spawn area is safe only while the timer runs. The second it expires, you are an ordinary vehicle in an ordinary position.
- It applies to everyone. The enemy rushing your spawn just spawned too. Neither of you can shoot until the window closes.
How to spend the window well
The correct use of spawn protection is to convert it into position. Treat the first seconds of every life as a repositioning phase:
- Move immediately. Start driving or flying the moment you spawn, in the direction of your intended route.
- Leave the spawn area entirely. Vehicles that idle in spawn lose the protection and keep the bad position.
- Head for your first piece of cover. A ridge, building, treeline, or depression — anything that breaks line of sight before the timer ends.
- Pick your route before you spawn. Deciding while protected is free; deciding while exposed is how you die.
The mistakes the window causes
Two failure patterns come directly from spawn protection:
- The idle spawn. Players who sit in spawn waiting for teammates or checking the map waste the protection and then move into the battlefield unprotected anyway. Never idle in spawn.
- The spawn-peek. Players who assume protection still covers them after firing a shot. It does not. The instant you engage, you are vulnerable.
Protection and the bigger picture
Spawn protection buys you time, not safety. The position you reach in those first seconds is the position you will fight from for the next minute, which is why spawn choice and route planning belong together. The respawn page covers when to spawn which vehicle, and the map awareness guide covers which routes are worth taking once protection drops.
Use the window. Do not lean on it. The best players spend their protected seconds crossing open ground, not standing still.
