Destiny 2 settings file location on PC explained
Most Destiny 2 settings live on Bungie's servers, not your drive. Find the local CVars file in the install folder, and learn why a setting won't stick.
| What | Where it lives |
|---|---|
| Your saved settings | Bungie’s servers, tied to your account |
| Local CVars | Inside the Destiny 2 install folder |
| Why you rarely need it | Cross save keeps your config in sync |
Bungie’s servers hold your settings
Most of your configuration is not on your PC at all. Destiny 2 stores settings on Bungie’s servers, which is why your options follow you across machines through cross save. Log in elsewhere and your layout is already there.
The local file that does exist is the CVars file, and it sits in the Destiny 2 install directory. You normally edit it through the in-game console rather than opening it by hand. Treat it as an advanced option, not a daily tool.
You almost never need to touch it. If a setting will not save, the cause is usually a sync or permission issue, not a missing file. Verify the game files through your launcher before you go hunting in folders.
Finding the CVars path in the install folder
For the exact current path, open your Steam or platform install location and look inside the Destiny 2 folder, or check Bungie’s support page. Install layouts shift with updates, so a path from an old forum post may be out of date.
When a setting will not stick
If an option keeps resetting, close the game, confirm you are online so the server sync completes, then reapply it and exit cleanly rather than force-closing. A forced close can drop the unsynced change. Only after that fails should you look at the local CVars file.
Don’t delete or rewrite CVars blindly. A bad edit can stop the game from launching, and you will then be fixing a problem you created. Change one thing, test, repeat.
