An inventory manager saves you hours of juggling gear across Destiny 2’s vault and characters. The right tool turns that chore into a few clicks. Here is how to pick one, connect it safely, and fix it when it breaks.

Step 1: pick a trusted tool

Destiny Item Manager, usually called DIM, is the most widely used option. It runs in your browser and has phone apps. It can move items, build loadouts, tag gear, and search your vault with filters. That makes it the default choice for most players.

Bungie’s official companion app also handles basic inventory moves and vendor lookups. It is the safest pick if you only need quick transfers. Everything else is optional.

Never download a tool from a random link, or one that asks for your Bungie password outside the official sign-in flow. If a site wants your credentials directly, close the tab.

Step 2: connect your account

DIM and similar tools use Bungie’s official API and sign-in screen. You authorize access, then the tool reads your characters and vault. The permission stays limited to inventory actions.

If a tool stops loading, sign out and back in. API tokens expire, and a stale session is the most common cause of a frozen inventory screen. Our server status guide helps when the outage is on Bungie’s side.

Browser issues come next. Ad blockers and privacy extensions can break the site. Whitelist the tool or open it in a private window with extensions off.

Step 3: build a routine

Tools only help if you use them weekly. A simple routine: dismantle duplicates, then tag keepers and pull them into loadouts before each activity. Our vault management guide covers a cleanup order that keeps the vault from filling up.

For weapons, tag god rolls and junk early. Sorting by perks is much easier outside the game. Our god rolls guide explains which perks matter by weapon type. If vault space still runs dry, review your collections and reclaim anything you can pull later.

A manager makes gear searchable, but the vault guide covers what is actually worth keeping once you find it.
