Helmet Levels Explained: Head Protection Basics
Rate helmets by the ammo tier they stop, then decide when head protection beats body armor.
A helmet protects the hit that kills fastest. Because headshots multiply damage, an unprotected head turns a grazing exchange into a death, and some rounds add effects on top of the damage — the 7.62x51 LS round deafens the target for 10 seconds on a headshot (values verified for Season 11, Oct 2026). The helmet’s job is to make that outcome less likely, and its level decides how much less.
How to read a helmet
Like body armor, a helmet is rated against penetration: rounds below its level are largely stopped, rounds above it punch through. The reading framework:
- Identify the ammo tier common on your map. The ammo penetration page explains how to read the number on the round.
- Buy the helmet level that meets or beats that tier if the budget allows.
- If it cannot, accept the risk consciously. A lower helmet is still better than none against mid-tier ammo, and it blocks the deafening and disorientation effects that decide follow-up fights.
Helmet versus armor: the budget argument
| Situation | Priority | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fights at range | Helmet first | Headshots land first at distance, with less time to react |
| Close-quarters maps | Body armor first | Spray hits torsos more often than heads |
| Balanced maps | Split the budget | Neither slot is worth starving; the kit budget page orders the spending |
| High-tier lobbies | Both, or neither | A mismatched pair dies to whichever slot is under-leveled |
The armor levels page covers the torso side of the same framework.
When helmets lose money
Helmets are expensive relative to the protection they give against high-penetration rounds, and a broken helmet repairs like any other gear. Two failure modes drain coins:
- Buying a helmet tier above your armor. Enemies shoot at the easiest kill; an over-specced helmet with a weak plate just relocates the problem.
- Skipping repairs. A cracked helmet is a full-price coin sink with partial protection. Check repair versus replacement costs in-game after any raid where your head takes hits.
Weigh the utility effects against the coin cost — the deafening from heavy rounds is the clearest example of a fight won without a kill — and check current helmet stats and prices in-game, since values are rebalanced between seasons.
