Monster Hunter Wilds Palico: The Support You Forget
Your Palico is a free second body with its own gear and gadgets. How to configure it so it actually contributes.
A free teammate with settings
Every hunter gets a Palico, and most players never open its menu. That is a mistake, because the Palico brings its own equipment, its own skills, and a behaviour setting that decides whether it helps or wanders.
Configured well, it is a second source of healing, traps, and damage. Left alone, it is a cat that occasionally hits things.
Gadgets decide the job
The Palico’s support gadget is the main lever. A healing-focused setup keeps you topped up during long hunts. A trap or utility setup creates openings you would otherwise have to spend items on. A damage setup thins small monsters and contributes chip damage to the target.
Pick based on what your build lacks, not on what looks strongest. A hunter with no healing items benefits enormously from a support Palico; a hunter already carrying a full support kit gets more from a damage or utility option.
Behaviour matters as much as gear
The Palico’s behaviour setting decides how aggressively it engages. An aggressive Palico pulls attention and takes hits, which is useful on a hunt you are struggling to control. A cautious Palico stays out of the way and supports from a distance.
Against a monster with wide attacks, an aggressive Palico is another body for the monster to hit and another opening for you. Against a monster that punishes being surrounded, it can be a liability.
What the Palico cannot do
It does not replace a real teammate. It does not hold aggro reliably, it does not deal meaningful damage relative to a hunter, and it cannot capture a monster or complete objectives for you.
Treat it as a support layer rather than a partner. The hunts you win because of the Palico are the ones where it healed you at the right moment or set a trap you did not have to spend.
Levelling and gear
The Palico levels alongside your progression and can be equipped with its own weapon and armour. That gear is cheap relative to hunter equipment and worth keeping current, because a Palico in outdated armour spends the hunt recovering rather than supporting.
When to change it
Before a hard hunt, not during one. Open the menu, check the gadget, check the behaviour, and check that the equipment is not three tiers behind yours. Thirty seconds of preparation is the cheapest improvement available to any build.
