Monster Hunter Wilds Combat Basics for New Hunters
The fundamentals new Wilds players need: eating before hunts, the Training Area, Focus Mode, Wounds, Seikret chasing, and not ignoring weak spots.
Eat before every hunt
Grill a meal at your tent’s BBQ menu before you leave. Meals last 30 minutes, or 50 with an additional ingredient, and the timer pauses while you are inside a camp, settlement, or the Grand Hub. Pick combinations that boost health and attack until you learn what each ingredient does. The stat and skill buffs are large enough to swing a tough early fight.
Learn one weapon in the Training Area
Fast travel to the Training Area at the Windward Plains Base Camp and spend real time with the weapon you chose. Learn the basic combo, how to dodge, and where the openings are. Do not try to learn all 14 weapons at once — one weapon you know beats fourteen you half-know. See the weapon types overview if you have not picked yet.
Use Focus Mode and Wounds
When you see glowing spots on a monster in Focus Mode, hit them. Wounds take bonus damage and a Focus Strike bursts them for a big stagger and free materials. This is the single biggest new combat loop in Wilds — read the full Focus Mode and Wounds explainer so you are popping wounds deliberately instead of by accident.
Chase on the Seikret
When a monster flees, mount your Seikret immediately. Chasing on foot wastes minutes you could spend fighting, and the mount auto-evades some attacks. The Seikret also lets you swap to a second weapon and sharpen safely — covered in the Seikret guide.
Collect everything
Mining outcrops, bone piles, herbs and bugs all feed early crafting for potions, traps and armor upgrades. Small monsters like Chatacabra, Doshaguma and Yian Kut-Ku carry armor sets that see you through the early game.
Bring friends or Support Hunters
If a hunt is too hard solo, send an SOS Flare — see the Support Hunters and SOS guide. NPC Support Hunters auto-join if not enough players answer, so you are never forced to fight alone.
