How to Play Astra in Valorant: Ability Guide and Tips
Astra is Valorant's map-wide Controller. Learn how Astral Form, Gravity Well, Nova Pulse, Nebula, and Cosmic Divide work, plus common mistakes.
How to Play Astra in Valorant
Astra is a Controller who plays from a bird’s-eye view. Instead of throwing utility, she places stars on the map and then detonates them into smokes, pulls, or concussions — which gives her more map-wide control than any other agent, at the cost of being completely vulnerable while she places them.
Astra’s Role: The Strategic Controller
Astra’s job is to control the entire map from anywhere on it. Where Omen smokes what he can see and Brimstone smokes from a map screen with a fixed radius, Astra places her utility anywhere she has placed a star. She suits players who think several steps ahead. Our Valorant roles explained guide covers how Controllers shape a round.
Astra’s Abilities Explained
Astral Form (Passive)
Free · passive
Astra enters a strategic astral form to place her stars across the map. She cannot see or act in the real world while in this form, so only use it when you are safe.
Stars (Signature)
5 stars · 150 credits each · placed from Astral Form · X
The stars are the actual ability, not the things you detonate. Each one costs 150 credits, you can hold five, and every star is a container that Gravity Well, Nova Pulse, or Nebula can later activate. Dissipating a star returns the charge after a 25-second cooldown; stars placed during the buy phase can be recalled instantly for the full charge while the barriers are still up.
That last detail is the one that defines her setup routine. Because buy-phase stars are refundable right up until the barriers drop, the correct pattern is to place all five early, look at what the enemy is doing on the first read, and dissipate the ones you will not need before the round actually starts.
Gravity Well (Basic)
1 charge · 60-second restock · C
A star that, when activated, pulls enemies toward its center and then detonates. It is excellent for dragging someone off the angle they are holding.
Nova Pulse (Basic)
1 charge · 60-second restock · Q
A star that detonates into a concussive blast, dazing enemies in its radius. Use it to open an execute or to punish a group standing together.
Nebula / Dissipate (Basic)
2 charges · 35-second restock · E to deploy, F to recall
A star that deploys into a smoke. Astra can dissipate it early and get the star back later in the round, which makes her the most economical smoke Controller in the game.
Cosmic Divide (Ultimate)
7 ultimate points · X
A massive wall of astral energy across the map that blocks bullets and muffles sound. It is one of the strongest ultimates for isolating a site or securing a plant.
Five stars cost 750 credits
Astra’s expensive number is not any individual ability — it is the star. At 150 credits each and a cap of five, filling her map costs 750, which is more than any other Controller spends on utility and roughly a rifle. That is why Astra players who carpet a site are usually unarmed by round four.
The efficient version spends on three stars, not five. A smoke, a gravity well and a spare cover almost every site, and the 300 credits saved is a Spectre. Her abilities also regenerate: Gravity Well and Nova Pulse each restock in 60 seconds and Nebula in 35, faster than Omen’s 40-second cycle, so the stars you place keep paying out across the round rather than being one-shot purchases.
How to Play Astra: Place Stars Early
The best Astra players place their stars during the buy phase and early round, so the utility is ready before the fight starts. Put a Nebula star on the choke you will smoke, a Gravity Well star on the angle you want to break, and keep one spare. Never enter Astral Form in the open — an Astra caught placing stars is a free kill. If you want to understand how utility creates round-winning space, our utility basics guide breaks down the fundamentals.
Common Mistakes Astra Players Make
- Entering Astral Form in an exposed position.
- Placing stars too late, after the fight has already started.
- Wasting Gravity Well on an enemy who is already leaving.
- Holding Cosmic Divide for a perfect moment that never comes.
How to Counter Astra
Astra is completely defenseless while in Astral Form, so push the moment you see her enter it. Her stars are visible on the ground before activation, so shoot or avoid them. When Cosmic Divide goes up, rotate through a different path rather than shooting through it.
Astra is the most strategic Controller in the game. Compare her with others on the full agent roster before committing her to ranked.
