War Thunder Battle Rating Explained: How Matchmaking Works
Your BR decides who you fight in every battle. See how it is set per mode, how the matchmaker brackets you, and why squads fight at their highest BR.
Battle Rating, or BR, is the single number that decides who you fight. Every vehicle in your garage carries a BR for each game mode, and that number — not the vehicle’s tech tree rank — puts you into matches. Understanding how BR works explains most of the frustration new players feel, from hopeless games to unfair repair bills.
How BR is assigned
Each vehicle has a separate BR for Arcade, Realistic, and Simulator battles. The game re-evaluates these values as balance changes, so treat any number you remember as a snapshot and check the garage for current values. In the tech tree and garage, the BR is displayed next to each vehicle. If a vehicle feels outclassed everywhere it goes, its BR relative to its neighbors in the tree is the number to study.
How BR builds a match
The matchmaker groups vehicles within a BR range around your own. A common spread is about one full BR step above and below your vehicle’s rating, which means most matches contain a mix of stronger and weaker vehicles on both teams. The matchmaker also tries to balance total team BR and player counts, but balance is an attempt, not a guarantee — check the team lists at spawn to see what you actually face.
Why squad BR takes the highest
When you queue in a squad, the matchmaker uses the highest BR in the lineup, not the average. A squad of a 3.7, a 4.0, and a 5.3 vehicle queues as 5.3. The reasoning is that the squad shares spawns, calls targets, and covers each other, so it must face tougher opposition. The practical consequence: mixing BRs in one lineup wastes the low-BR vehicles’ protection. Either bring vehicles with a tight BR spread or accept that the cheap vehicles will see uptier fights.
What to do with this
Three habits follow directly from how BR works:
- Read the BR before every queue. If your best vehicle sits at the top of your lineup, assume you will fight at that BR and nothing lower.
- Keep lineup spreads tight. Vehicles within roughly half a BR step of each other avoid the worst mismatches. See the survival tactics in uptier and downtier fights.
- Let BR drive your economy decisions. Repair costs and rewards scale with the BR of the battle, so a vehicle at the top of its range can lose money even in wins. The repair cost page covers the math.
BR is not a difficulty setting you choose — it is a property of your vehicles. Choose your garage lineup, and you have chosen your BR.
