War Thunder Repair Costs: Why Matches Lose You Money

A match can pay less than its own repair bill. Learn the three ingredients of a losing battle and why Battle Rating drives the size of the bill.

Every vehicle you spawn in War Thunder carries a repair cost. The game charges it whether you win or lose, survive or die in thirty seconds. When the reward for a match falls below that charge, the match pays you negative Silver Lions, and new players usually blame bad luck when the real cause is arithmetic.

How the repair cost works

The repair cost is a property of the vehicle, and it scales with two things: the vehicle’s rank and the Battle Rating (BR) it fights at. A vehicle pulled into higher-BR fights pays more to spawn. That is the game telling you the vehicle is being fielded against deadlier opposition, and the bill arrives regardless of how the match goes.

Rewards, by contrast, scale with what you do. Activity, score, and survival time all push the reward up. So the match outcome for your wallet is:

Net SL = reward for your activity - repair cost - ammunition cost

Two players in the same match can walk away with opposite results because one earned enough activity to cover the bill and the other did not.

The three ingredients of a losing battle

A negative match is almost always a combination of three factors:

IngredientWhy it hurts
High Battle RatingRaises the repair bill before the match starts
Expensive vehicleThe bill is larger to begin with
Early deathCuts off the reward before it can cover the bill

Any one of these is survivable. All three together guarantee a loss. A cheap low-BR vehicle that dies early still nets close to zero; an expensive high-BR vehicle that dies early is a hole in your balance.

This is also why the repair cost of a vehicle changes with its lineup. Matchmaking considers the vehicles in your lineup, so the BR your expensive vehicle fights at — and the bill you pay — depends on what else you brought. The Battle Rating mechanics page covers how the game picks the room.

Reducing the bill

Three tools reduce repair losses, in order of accessibility:

  1. Play vehicles you survive in. The reward side of the formula is the part you control most directly.
  2. Use a talisman. A talisman removes the repair cost on a tech-tree vehicle and adds bonuses on top — see how talismans work.
  3. Manage your lineup BR. Keep your expensive vehicles in lineups where they fight at a comfortable rating.

Repair costs change with patches and per vehicle, so make purchase decisions on the ratio between the bill and your income rather than on the bill alone. What never changes is the formula: if you die before you earn, the bill wins.
