War Thunder Ground Controls and Settings Guide

Set up ground controls that work: key bindings, mouse sensitivity, and the settings order to change before your first realistic battle.

Default controls work, but they are not tuned for how you will actually play. Ten minutes of setup prevents months of fighting your own hands. This page covers ground battles only — air and helicopter controls are a separate skill, covered in air or ground first.

Bind these actions first

Ground combat needs a handful of actions under your fingers at all times. Bind them before you touch sensitivity:

ActionWhy it matters
Movement (WASD)Basic driving; hull traverse
Aim / turret (mouse)Where you look is where you shoot
FireObvious, but bind it where your hand rests
Optics zoom cycleRanges decide whether you can hit anything
Map (full + tactical)Checking the map without losing your gun on target
Rangefinder (if fitted)Distance estimation before you commit to a shot
Repair / engine controlsSituational recovery at capture points

Bind the map to a key you can hit without releasing aim. Looking away from a sight to check the map is how flanks happen.

Sensitivity: the framework, not a number

There is no universally correct sensitivity; there is a correct relationship between your hand movement and your aim. Work through it in this order:

  1. Set mouse sensitivity so a full swipe across the pad turns your turret roughly a quarter turn. You want fine control without lifting the mouse.
  2. Adjust aim zoom sensitivity separately. Binocular and gunner sights feel better slower than the driver view.
  3. Test in a training mission against a stationary target: can you track a slow crossing target without overshooting? If you oscillate, drop sensitivity until tracking is smooth.
  4. Only then consider advanced options like axis-specific multipliers. Get the base feel right before adding complexity.

Settings order before your first realistic battle

  1. Complete the training missions with your new binds — see how to use training missions.
  2. Play Arcade Battles until aiming feels automatic.
  3. Re-check sensitivity after twenty matches, not after two; muscle memory takes time to give honest feedback.
  4. Move to Realistic with controls you no longer think about.

Mode differences change what your controls must do — markers, ballistics, and respawn rules all shift between Arcade, Realistic, and Simulator. Read Arcade vs Realistic vs Simulator before you assume one setup fits all modes.

One rule that outranks all settings

Whatever you bind, keep firing and optics on the keys your hand already rests on. Muscle memory beats optimal layout.
