Are War Thunder Squadron Vehicles Worth It?
Squadron vehicles pay off only with an active squadron behind you; judge the reward, the research discount, and how often you will actually play it.
Squadron vehicles are vehicles you buy with squadron research points instead of Silver Lions or Golden Eagles. That funding source is the whole story: squadron research is generated by squadron activity, so the vehicle is only “cheap” if you are part of a squadron that actually plays together. Without that, the purchase is not really on the table.
What you are actually deciding
Three questions, in order:
- Do you have an active squadron? A dead squadron generates little to no squadron research, which makes every squadron vehicle unreachable regardless of its listed price. Check your squadron’s activity level before anything else.
- Does the vehicle fit what you play? Squadron vehicles span nations and roles. A squadron vehicle for a nation or mode you skip is a waste of accumulated points.
- Will you still play it in three months? Squadron research accrues slowly. A vehicle that leaves your rotation makes that slow accrual pointless.
If the answer to any of these is no, the value is zero no matter how good the discount looks.
The value calculation
Squadron vehicles typically offer a research discount compared to buying the same or similar vehicles through the normal tree. The discount is real, but it is paid in time:
Value = (money saved) / (time spent earning the squadron points)
Compare that against the alternatives for the same playtime:
| Option | Cost | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Squadron vehicle | Squadron research points | You play with an active squadron regularly |
| Tech-tree vehicle | Silver Lions + research points | You are already progressing that line |
| Premium vehicle | Real money | You want it now and it fits your lineups |
The middle row deserves attention: if the squadron vehicle’s nation is one you are already researching, the squadron discount accelerates a line you were grinding anyway. That is the strongest case for buying one.
The social cost
There is a hidden price. Squadron research rewards playing with your squadron, which means scheduling around other people. If you mostly play solo at odd hours, the squadron vehicle pipeline will always be slow no matter how active the roster claims to be. The squadron mechanics page covers how activity and rewards work in more detail.
Verdict framework
Buy a squadron vehicle when all four are true: your squadron is active, the vehicle fills a nation or role gap you actually play, you enjoy it enough to keep it in rotation, and the squadron route is faster than the tech-tree route for you. Otherwise, treat squadron research as a nice bonus and spend your attention on your main line instead.
