Should You Buy This Vehicle in War Thunder?
Run any premium, squadron or event vehicle through five checks — plus three real examples where the stat card lies about how the tank actually plays
Premium vehicle, squadron vehicle, event reward, marketplace listing — every vehicle purchase in War Thunder passes through the same five gates. Run them in order. A vehicle that fails an early gate is not worth analysing further, no matter how good the stat card looks.
The five gates
Gate 1: Mode fit. Which mode do you actually play — Arcade, Realistic, Simulator, or a mix? A vehicle that excels in a mode you never touch is a garage ornament.
Gate 2: Budget fit. Can you afford it without draining your repair buffer? Check its current price, and remember that modifications are part of the purchase — see whether the parts that make it work sit early or late in its modification tree.
Gate 3: Battle Rating position. Where does it fight, and what does it face there? Matchmaking builds the room around your whole lineup, so one high-BR vehicle drags everything else into harder rooms. The Battle Rating mechanics page explains how the room is built.
Gate 4: Lineup role. Does it fill a gap? Buying a second heavy when you have no scout duplicates strength and leaves weakness untouched.
Gate 5: Lasting fun. Will you still play it in a month? This gate eliminates more bad purchases than the other four combined.
Scoring the gates
| Result | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Passes all five | Buy it |
| Fails budget or mode fit | Skip it, revisit later |
| Fails BR position | Risky; only buy if the fun score is very high |
| Fails lineup role | Skip unless you are deliberately changing your play |
| Fails lasting fun | Skip. This is the most common bad purchase |
Three real cases where the card misleads
The AMX-30 ACRA looks like a duelist and is a second-line shooter. It mounts a 142 mm smoothbore firing the ACRA missile to 800 mm of penetration past 3 km — numbers that make players expect a front-line MBT. The rest of the picture: roughly four missiles per minute, the AMX-30 (1972)‘s thin protection, and no rapid-fire anti-aircraft gun, only a rifle-calibre weapon on the commander’s cupola. Passing gate 4 means asking “what role does this actually fill,” not “how far does it shoot.”
The Zrínyi II reads as an artillery piece until you unlock one shell. At BR 2.7 its stock round carries 27 mm of penetration and the unlockable HEAT carries 120 mm. Same vehicle, two entirely different answers to “can this tank kill what it meets.” This is gate 2 applied properly — if the modifications that make the vehicle work sit late, the purchase price is not the real price.
Israeli vehicles have no cheap entry at all. Israel’s ground tree starts at Rank IV, so there is no low-BR Israel Premium to learn on. A premium purchase there immediately faces stabilised opponents and missile threats, and every prerequisite in gates 3 and 4 gets harder. See the Israel tree order before buying anything from it.
The mistake the gates are designed to catch
The classic error is buying one strong vehicle into an empty lineup. It raises your matchmaking to a tier where your other spawns cannot compete, you have one life that matters, and the “good purchase” produces worse matches than staying where you were.
The fix is gate 3 read honestly: matchmaking uses the highest vehicle you bring. A purchase that has nothing to sit next to is a purchase that makes your whole garage worse.
The two-minute version
Check the price, check where it fights, check that your lineup needs it, and check that you will still want it next month. Anything failing the price check or the fun check is a no. Everything else is a maybe that depends on the other three.
The specialised pages go deeper on each purchase type: premium vehicles, squadron vehicles, and event vehicles.
