War Thunder Talismans: How They Work and When to Use

A talisman removes repair cost and adds reward bonuses, so the right target is a vehicle you already play often and reliably survive in.

A talisman is the closest thing War Thunder has to a targeted economy upgrade. You attach it to a vehicle you already own in the tech tree, and that vehicle stops costing you money to spawn while paying more when you do well. It converts a vehicle you like into a vehicle you can play indefinitely without watching your balance.

What a talisman does

Two effects, both mechanical:

EffectWhat it changes
Repair cost removedSpawning the vehicle no longer deducts a repair fee
Reward bonusThe vehicle earns bonus Silver Lions and Research Points per match

The repair removal is the larger effect for most players. Every match in that vehicle goes from “reward minus repair” to “reward,” which flips marginal matches positive and makes bad nights survivable. The bonus then compounds on top for good matches.

Talismans are bought with Golden Eagles and applied to tech-tree vehicles. Availability and prices change over time, so buy a talisman for the vehicle you are actually grinding rather than the one you intend to grind later.

What makes a good talisman target

Value follows a simple formula:

Talisman value = (repair cost saved per match + bonus earned per match) x matches you will play

The first half is fixed by the game. The second half is entirely you. That produces a clear checklist:

FactorGood targetBad target
Play frequencyIn your regular lineupOccasional fun pick
Survival rateYou usually come back aliveYou die early in it
Repair costHigh enough that removal mattersSo cheap the saving is noise
Lineup stabilityA vehicle you will keep for monthsOne you will outgrow next week

The counterintuitive line is the repair cost row. Putting a talisman on a cheap vehicle wastes most of the effect, because there was little repair cost to remove. The sweet spot is a mid-to-high rank vehicle with a painful bill that you love playing anyway.

Talisman vs premium vehicle

Both remove repair pressure, but they are different purchases. A talisman upgrades a vehicle you already enjoy and already have in your garage. A premium vehicle is a new vehicle with its own Battle Rating, lineup fit, and learning curve. If your problem is “my favorite vehicle costs too much,” the talisman is the direct fix. If your problem is “I want a new vehicle,” compare it as a purchase in premium vehicle value.

Talisman mistakes, from nation grinds to dead vehicles

  • Talismaning a vehicle to grind a nation you are about to leave.
  • Talismaning before checking how often the vehicle actually appears in your lineups.
  • Expecting a talisman to fix early-death habits; a zero-repair vehicle that dies at minute one still earns almost nothing.
  • Spending Golden Eagles on a talisman when crew slots would solve a bigger bottleneck — see the GE spending guide for that comparison.

The repair mechanics behind all of this are covered in repair costs explained.
