Destiny 2 Modifiers: Surges, Overcharge, and Weekly Burns
What Destiny 2's weekly Nightfall modifiers mean and how to build around Surges, Overcharge, and elemental Burns.
| Modifier type | What it does | How to respond |
|---|---|---|
| Surge | Boosts one damage type | Equip that element |
| Overcharge | Boosts one weapon type | Bring that weapon |
| Elemental Burn | Environment damages you | Mind positioning |
Nightfall and rotating activities change these every week. Read the list before you load in.
A Surge raises damage for one element, such as solar or arc. Match your subclass and your gun to it. An Overcharge favors one weapon class, so a Heavy or a specific type hits harder. Elemental Burn hurts you with environmental damage of a given element. You cannot turn it off, but you can play around it.
Surge in detail
A Surge rewards committing to one element for the whole run. Mixed-element kits waste it. Pick one and build around it from the first encounter, not after a wipe.
Overcharge is not optional
An Overcharge favors a weapon class, often your Heavy. Ignore it and you lose your biggest damage window. Slot the named type even if another gun feels comfortable. The weekly screen states the type plainly.
Burn is positioning, not panic
Elemental Burn punishes standing in bad spots more than it punishes your build. Keep moving, watch the floor, and use cover. A careful player outlasts a glass-cannon one here.
Stack the good weeks
Some weeks pair a Surge and an Overcharge on the same element. That is the week to go all-in on one build. Check the screen, then commit fully instead of hedging.
Why the weekly matters
The modifier decides your loadout more than the map does. A fireteam that ignores the Surge fights at a disadvantage all run. A team that leans in clears faster and safer.
Check the weekly line in the activity screen. It names the exact Surge and Overcharge. Plan from there, not from habit.
Build around the Surge
Swap your subclass to the boosted element first. Then pick weapons that share it. Our buildcrafting basics explains how elements tie your kit together.
Perks matter once the type is set. A roll that rewards the Surge element pulls more weight that week. Our weapon perks guide covers which traits to chase.
Where to practice
Nightfalls are the easiest place to learn modifiers. The same rules scale into harder content. Our nightfalls guide walks through the weekly rotation.
Burn catches careless players. Stay off the glowing floor, respect the element, and don’t overcommit to a lane. Small positioning beats a bigger gun here.
One last check
Before each run, confirm the modifier in-game. It rotates, so last week’s build may be wrong this week. Adapt, then go.
