Destiny 2 Distortions: The Hourly Destination Modifier
Distortions boost public event loot one tier on the hourly rotating destination. Farm heroic events during the hour and queue from orbit as it flips.
Distortions are a destination modifier introduced in Update 9.7.0, part of the Monument of Triumph update. They are not a raid or dungeon effect. Each hour, one patrol destination enters a Distortion state, and the active planet plus the remaining time show on the Destinations screen.
What happens during a Distortion
While active, the destination gets a red visual glow and Eclipse energy in the air. Combatants there are empowered with extra resilience and special powers, so patrols and public events feel harder. The trade-off is reward: public event loot goes up one tier. A base Tier 3 event becomes Tier 4, and a heroic Tier 4 event becomes Tier 5, which is the cleanest free source of high-tier gear in the game.
Where they appear
Distortions can hit the EDZ, Nessus, Dreaming City, the Moon, Cosmodrome, Europa, and the Court of Savathûn. Because the rotation moves every hour, timing a destination you need is more useful than the specific activity. Completing activities and defeating combatants inside the zone also awards Strange Matter, a currency tied to the feature.
How to use them
For tier-5 farming, run heroic public events on the distorted destination during its hour. For casual Triumph completion, Distortions are the lowest-effort route. They do not affect raids or dungeons, so plan your endgame loot separately. Because the window is short, queue the destination from orbit right as the hour flips rather than walking in from a stalled session.
The Strange Matter payoff
Defeating combatants and clearing activities inside a distorted zone also awards Strange Matter, which feeds the Monument of Triumph track. If you are behind on that season’s triumphs, Distortions double as the easiest way to bank the currency without grinding endgame content. The weekly reset guide explains how rotations are timed, and how to get exotics covers the loot systems Distortions do not touch.
