Destiny 2 Server Status: How to Check If Servers Are Down

How to check Destiny 2 server status, what the common error messages mean, and how to tell a real outage from your own connection

When Destiny 2 will not let you in, the first question is whether the problem is yours. Bungie publishes status, and checking it takes a minute.

Official status sources

Bungie’s Help site runs a server status page covering Destiny 2 on every platform. Check it before anything else. Bungie also posts outage notices through their official social accounts.

Inside the game, the News tile shows maintenance banners during planned downtime. If you can reach the title screen but not the character screen, the game is usually mid-maintenance.

Planned maintenance windows

Bungie performs weekly maintenance on Tuesdays around the reset. Servers go down for a few hours, then come back with any hotfixes. Larger update days can run longer. Save raid plans for after the maintenance window closes.

Reading the error messages

“Servers are not available” or a network error code usually means a real outage. Our error codes page translates the specific codes.

“You lack something” often appears at Monument kiosks. It means you are short on materials, not that the item is missing. Check for Exotic Ciphers, Ascendant Shards, and Glimmer.

Is it Bungie or your platform?

Ask one question: are friends on other platforms also locked out? If yes, it is a Bungie outage. If only one platform is affected, check that platform’s network status. A PlayStation Network or Xbox outage looks identical to a Destiny outage from inside the game.

Steps before you panic

Restart the game first. Then test another activity, like patrol. If patrol works, matchmaking for a specific mode may just be short-staffed. Power-cycle your console or router last. If nothing works and the status page is clean, contact Bungie Support with your error code.

Is Destiny 2 shutting down?

The game is in maintenance mode. Update 9.7.0, Monument of Triumph, was the final major content drop, and Bungie has not announced further seasons. Servers stay online, and existing content remains fully playable. Nothing in the current roadmap points to a shutdown.

Where to check player counts

Bungie does not publish player counts. Steam Charts and SteamDB show PC concurrent players only, which is a partial picture. Treat spikes there as interest signals, not health signals.

When the answer is a disconnect rather than downtime, the error code page maps the codes that appear with it.
