Warfare Infantry Classes: Roles and Squad Builds
Fill every squad slot with intent: assault breaks, support heals, engineer builds, recon finds the enemy first.
Warfare spawns you as infantry, and the four classes exist so a squad covers every job instead of five players doing the same one. Class choice in Warfare is less about a hero power fantasy and more about slot filling: if your squad has no engineer, vehicles die unrepaired; if it has no recon, every push walks into the unknown. Pick the slot your team is missing.
What each class does in Warfare
| Class | Core job in Warfare | What you actually do |
|---|---|---|
| Assault | Break positions | Lead pushes, trade first, create openings with grenades and raw damage |
| Support | Keep the squad fighting | Heal, resupply, and hold objective presence so the point stays yours |
| Engineer | Shape the ground | Build fortifications at chokepoints, repair vehicles, clear paths with tools |
| Recon | Find the enemy first | Spot positions the front line cannot see, mark targets, work the flanks |
The class roles above are the stable part; specific gadgets and numbers change with updates, so learn each class by the job it performs on the map and treat its current gadget list as the implementation rather than the definition does.
The squad that works
A five-player squad with every slot covered beats five assault players on almost every map. A balanced default:
- Two Assault — front line and objective presence.
- One Support — sustain; without a support, a long defense grinds your squad down.
- One Engineer — fortifications and vehicle repair; on vehicle maps this slot doubles your armor’s lifespan.
- One Recon — information; this is the slot most squads skip and most regret skipping.
Small squads should compress the same list: one damage dealer, one sustain, one utility, one information.
Reading the map before you pick
Your class pick should follow the terrain:
- Dense interiors and trenches: assault and support matter most; engineers build where the choke points are.
- Open maps with vehicles: an engineer near your armor is worth more than an extra rifle.
- Maps with strong rooftop play: recon earns its slot by denying the enemy the high ground.
Matchup notes
Individual operators inside a class change how the slot plays. Some assault operators add mobility, some add explosive area denial; some recon operators add detection tools rather than just marksman rifles. The operator matchups page covers which operators suit Warfare specifically, and practicing your class’s core loop in the training ground is faster than learning it live.
Positioning habits that matter more than class
- Stay with the squad. A lone player of any class dies to a pair.
- Take the class slot your team lacks, not the one you personally enjoy most.
- Learn one class deeply before spreading; a great engineer beats a mediocre everything.
The mode overview explains how objectives and vehicles fit around infantry, and the vehicle guide covers the other half of the team when you step out of the infantry role.
