Warfare King of the Hill Strategy: Point Rotation

Rotate before the point moves, split smoke and recon duties, and keep one player alive on the hill at all times.

King of the Hill turns Warfare into a race for presence: control the point, score over time, and win by tempo rather than by clearing the map. Most KOTH losses come from two mistakes — arriving at the new point after the enemy is already set, and losing the hill for the ten seconds it takes to clear a corner. This page covers how to fix both.

How points rotate

Points either sit in one location for the whole match or move on a set rotation. Either way, the rules that matter are simple:

  • Presence scores. A single surviving player on the point beats five players dead twenty meters away.
  • Contested points stop scoring. The fight on the hill is the fight that matters; everything else is positioning for it.
  • Rotation is announced in advance. The next point is usually telegraphed before it activates, which means you can leave early — and should.

Rotation discipline

  • Leave before the point moves. Ten seconds of travel time saved is ten seconds of setup gained at the new hill.
  • Take the safe route, not the short one. The direct line between two points is the most watched ground on the map. Use edges and interiors even if it takes longer.
  • Recon moves first. Send your fastest information player to the next point while the rest of the squad holds the current one; the squad follows once the route is confirmed safe.

Roles on the hill

Split duties explicitly rather than letting everyone fight the same fight:

DutyWhoJob
Point presenceOne designated playerStand on the point, survive, do not chase
Point clearingTwo playersClear the angles overlooking the point
SmokeOne playerSmoke the approach so presence can be re-established
Flank watchOne playerWatch the route the enemy will rotate from

The designated presence player is the slot squads forget. Assign it out loud; if everyone plays “point clearer,” the hill empties every time someone dies.

Smoke and recon allocation

  • Smoke the approaches you cannot see. A smoked approach lets one player hold the point against three.
  • Smoke on rotation. When moving between points, smoke the gap you must cross.
  • Recon works the enemy rotation. The enemy squad has to travel too; spotting them mid-rotation lets you set the new point first instead of arriving into an ambush.

When the hill is lost

Do not suicide-retake. Fall back to cover near the point, wait for the squad to respawn together, and re-enter as a group with smoke. A retake that trades three-for-one on the point usually still wins, because you then hold the scoring position with numbers.
