Aftershock Warfare Map Guide: The Quake Mechanics
Track the quake counter, reposition after every terrain change, and unlock the AAV by surviving three shocks.
Aftershock is the Warfare map that fights back. Server-triggered earthquakes periodically change the terrain — collapses open new routes, close old ones, and shift which positions are safe. After three quakes, the amphibious AAV unlocks for the attacking team, which changes how the end of the match plays. The teams that win are the ones that treat every quake as a forced reposition rather than a light show.
How the quake cycle works
- Trigger — the server fires the quake on its own schedule. You cannot prevent it and you cannot predict the exact second; you can only watch the counter advance.
- Terrain change — routes open or close, and cover you relied on may be gone. Positions that were strong before the shake are often weak after it.
- Counter advances — the match tracks how many quakes have happened.
- AAV unlock — once three quakes have occurred, the AAV becomes available, giving the attacking team an amphibious option for the late push.
Because the schedule is server-side, do not build a plan that assumes specific timing — watch the counter on the map HUD and plan around “the next quake can happen at any time.”
Rules for playing around quakes
- Do not bunker in one building. A position that survives quake one may collapse in quake two. Keep a secondary position ready at all times.
- Re-scan after every quake. Thirty seconds after the shake, look for the new route and the new cover. The first squad to use a freshly opened path usually walks into the objective.
- Do not cross collapsing ground. If a route is visibly failing, wait for the shake to finish; players caught mid-crossing when terrain shifts rarely survive.
- Hold edges, not centers. Terrain changes hit the most built-up areas hardest; ground that was already open tends to stay usable.
The AAV window
Once the AAV unlocks, the late match usually shifts to an amphibious push. Defenders should anticipate water approaches before the unlock happens — watching the water costs nothing, and being surprised by the first AAV landing is how close matches end.
- Attackers: do not rush the AAV out alone. It is a transport, not a fortress; land it at cover and unload with the squad.
- Defenders: keep one player with anti-vehicle tools facing likely landing zones once the counter hits three.
Quake-phase table
| Phase | What changes | Your job |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-quake | Map as it loaded | Hold, note your secondary position |
| Quake | Terrain shifts | Stop moving, wait it out |
| Post-quake | New routes and cover | Re-scan, rotate through new paths |
| After third | AAV available | Watch the water, adjust anti-vehicle |
The vehicle guide covers AAV handling alongside the other vehicles, Colosseum is the other map where the ground itself fights you, and the mode overview explains the objective structure the quakes are wrapped around.
