Escape from Tarkov Scav Runs: The Free Income You Ignore
A Scav raid costs nothing, risks nothing, and pays for your PMC raids. How the cooldown, the karma system and Scav gear actually work.
What a Scav run gives you
You spawn as a Scav with randomised gear — a weapon, some ammunition, a rig, sometimes armour. None of it was yours, so none of it can be lost in the sense that matters: your PMC’s stash is untouched. What you bring out goes into your stash. That is the whole economic argument. A Scav raid that extracts with a bag of barter items pays for the next two PMC kits, and it costs you nothing but the cooldown.
The cooldown is the constraint
Scav raids run on a timer between runs. The practical consequence is that Scav runs are not something you spam; they are something you schedule. The habit that works: run a Scav when the timer is up, and use that run to gather materials you actually need rather than whatever you find first. That makes Scav runs the natural home for hideout material gathering, because dying costs nothing — see the hideout page for what is worth carrying out.
Scav karma does change things
Killing other Scavs as a Scav has consequences that build over time. Cooperative play — not shooting other Scavs, and not shooting player Scavs who are clearly not hostile — keeps the relationship intact, and that relationship affects how Scavs and the traders treat you. The narrow version: shoot Scavs and you get a worse Scav experience. Do not shoot and the mode keeps paying. The Scav karma page covers what the value actually gates.
Timing your entry
Entering a map late as a Scav is a different game. PMCs have often extracted, bodies are unlooted, and the map is quiet — which is the best possible state for a player with a bad gun. Entering early puts you in front of PMCs with real armour. The habit: treat a late Scav spawn as a looting run, not a fighting one. Move toward the places people die — the extracts, the hot buildings — and take what they left.
What not to do
Do not fight PMCs as a Scav unless the fight is unavoidable. Your gear is worse, your ammo is worse, and your death costs the run even if the stash is safe. Do not hoard the gear. A Scav kit you keep “for later” is stash space you could be using; sell what you will not use and keep the money. The money-making page puts Scav income into the hourly arithmetic that decides whether a run is worth doing at all.
