Escape from Tarkov Trader Levels: Spend and Reputation

Loyalty levels need money spent, reputation earned and a player level. Why concentrating purchases beats spreading them, and who to sell what.

The three gates

Money spent is cumulative and does not reset. It is the easiest gate to clear and the one players over-invest in, because it feels like progress. Reputation moves when you complete that trader’s quests. It is the gate that actually blocks people, because it is quest-driven and quests are time-limited by map knowledge rather than by money. Player level is a hard wall. You cannot reach loyalty level 3 at level 15 no matter how much you spend, which means the efficient strategy is to raise your level first and spend second.

Concentrate, do not spread

Because spent money is tracked per trader, spreading purchases across all of them is the slowest possible route. Pick the two traders whose stock you actually use — typically the ammunition and weapon trader, plus the medical trader — and route almost all selling through them. Selling counts toward spent money. That is the mechanism most players miss: the fastest way to open a trader’s next level is to sell them everything you extract rather than to buy things you do not need.

Who wants what

Each trader values a category. Medical items to the medic, armor and rigs to the clothing trader, weapons and ammo to the arms dealer, food and barter to the general trader, junk to the fence. Selling an item to the wrong trader costs you roubles and reputation progress at the same time. The exception is the flea market: once unlocked it pays better than any trader for most items, but flea sales do not build trader reputation. Use the flea for money and the traders for progression, and accept that the two goals pull in opposite directions.

The early-wipe route

Level fast on one map you know. Sell everything to two traders. Complete the quests those two traders give you. Buy nothing you cannot use this raid. That route reaches loyalty level 2 in the first week for most players, which is when the good ammunition and the useful medical items become available. The money page covers how to fund it, and the hideout page covers the modules that reduce how much you need to buy.

What not to do

Do not buy reputation. Some quest chains look like chores and they are — but they are the only path to the gate, and skipping them means paying flea market prices for the rest of the wipe.
