Hunt Showdown Bleeding and Healing: Chunks vs Blood

Two separate damage systems decide whether you survive. Bleeding drains you, chunk loss shrinks you, and the medkit fixes only one.

Two bars, two problems

Hunt tracks current health and your maximum health. Current health is what a bullet takes away. Maximum health is what permanent injuries and burns take away, and it does not come back mid-fight. That distinction is the entire healing system. A player at half health with all chunks intact is in a much better position than a player at full health with two chunks gone.

Bleeding is a clock, not a wound

Bullets, arrows, and animal attacks cause bleeding, which drains current health over time. It stops on its own eventually, but not before it has cost you a chunk’s worth of health. Bandages from your medkit stop bleeding. This is the correct use of a medkit charge: stopping a bleed at low health is worth more than topping up a scratch.

Medkit charges are the match’s real currency

Your medkit has limited charges and each one is a decision. Healing a small amount wastes the charge; using it to stop a bleed, or to get back above the threshold where one bullet kills you, is the correct spend. Because charges are limited, healing between fights is where most of them go. That means the fight you lose is usually the one that starts before you healed from the previous one.

Chunk loss changes the maths

When you lose a chunk, your maximum health drops. Two chunks gone and a body shot that used to be survivable now kills. Downed hunters who get revived come back with reduced chunks, which is why a wiped fight is so hard to recover from even when nobody dies for good. Chunks are recovered at resupply points and after a successful banish. That makes them a resource tied to position, and it is a real reason to leave a compound rather than hold it.

Practical order of operations

Stop the bleed first. Then heal to a safe threshold if you have a spare charge. Then move, because standing in the open while the [healing animation](/guides/hunt-pvp-tips/) plays is how a bandage turns into a death. Never heal in a doorway. Never heal with your back to a window. The animation locks you into place for longer than it feels.

When to disengage entirely

If you are down two chunks and the enemy team still has three players, the fight is already lost on paper. Burning a medkit charge to survive one more exchange is usually worse than leaving, restoring at a resupply point, and coming back with a full bar.
