Hunt: Showdown Ambush Guide

The ambush is the highest-percentage play in Hunt. Set the trap, hold the angle, and let the team walk into a fight they did not start. How to set one that holds.

Ambush beats engagement every time

A team that starts the fight from cover with a known angle wins it more often than a team that meets the enemy in the open. The compound defense page covers holding a building; the ambush is the offensive version, where you let them come to you. The engagement range page tells you where your weapons win; set the ambush inside that range.

Use sound to bait

Movement and gunfire draw enemies. Make noise away from your real position, or let a monster do it, and the enemy moves toward the sound, not toward you. The traps guide page covers concertina and poison traps that turn a bait into a kill.

Hold the second angle

A one-person ambush is a coin flip. A team that holds two angles on the same approach turns the coin into a guarantee. The enemy cannot cover both, and the moment they commit to one, the other fires.

Do not over-commit to the kill

After the ambush, the survivors scatter or push. Resist chasing; the ambush site is your advantage, and leaving it to pursue gives it away. Hold, re-peek, and let them come again or extract.

Bait the sound

Movement and gunfire draw enemies, so make noise away from your real position and let the enemy walk into your lane. The traps guide covers concertina and poison traps that turn a bait into a kill, and the stealth approach page covers the quiet setup. Hold a second angle so the ambush becomes a guarantee.

Do not over-commit

After the ambush, the survivors scatter or push, so resist chasing. Hold, re-peek, and let them come again or extract, because leaving the site gives away your advantage.
