KCD2 Horse Guide: Pebbles, Herring and the Best Mounts

How to get Pebbles back, unlock Good Old Pebbles, compare Herring and the paid horses, and care for a mount that gets you across Bohemia.

The four stats

  • Speed — pace across trot, canter, and gallop.
  • Stamina — how long you can gallop; spur (hold Shift) drains it, and running it empty while spurring can buck you off.
  • Courage — resistance to being spooked. Low-courage horses bolt when a fight starts.
  • Capacity — the saddlebag weight limit, separate from Henry’s own carry weight.

Getting Pebbles back

Pebbles is Henry’s original horse, lost early. Reclaim her at the Semine stables: find the grey horse in the pen, then deal with the groom. A Speech check gets her free; if it fails you buy her back for a modest fee (sources report roughly 180–410 Groschen depending on Charisma). Equip the bridle and saddle the groom offers to lift her base stats.

Good Old Pebbles

Ride Pebbles long enough — community testing puts it around 35 km, or Horsemanship level 17 — and you unlock Good Old Pebbles, a free Horsemanship perk that permanently lifts her stamina, capacity, speed, and value. Post-perk numbers vary between sources because of patch changes, so read her stat screen in-game rather than trusting a figure. A maxed Pebbles competes with mounts that cost thousands.

Herring and the paid horses

After “For Whom the Bell Tolls”, Kabat at Trosky Castle offers Herring free; ride about 50 km to unlock Red Herring, which fixes Herring’s weak capacity. Beyond the free pair, Pisek Lad is the strong all-rounder and Kincsem the fastest, both from Groom Hanniker in Kuttenberg at steep prices; Erdel and Mark carry the most, while Kasztanka and Erdel have the best courage for fighting from the saddle.

Care and theft

A dirty or bloodied horse raises your detection and hurts stealth-adjacent checks — wash it at a horse handler for around 200 Groschen. Any unattended horse can be mounted and ridden, but you do not own it until you register it with a handler (Mikolai at the Nomad Camp, or Stoia west of Kuttenberg) and pay a fee; witnesses report it as a crime. For travel planning around the map, see the quest order checklist; for the perks that pair with riding, read skills and perks.
