Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Alchemy: Reading the Bench
Alchemy is a step-by-step process that punishes improvisation. How the bench works and which potions are worth brewing.
It is a recipe, not a menu
You do not select a potion and wait. You follow the recipe’s steps at the bench: adding ingredients in order, grinding, boiling for a set number of turns, distilling, and pouring. Skipping a step or boiling too long produces a weaker result or nothing at all. The book is open beside you for a reason.
Reading the recipe properly
Each recipe specifies quantities, order, and timing. The timing is the part people get wrong: a “turn” is a specific action, not a guess, and the recipe expects you to count them. Read the whole recipe before starting. Restarting costs ingredients, and ingredients are the scarce resource.
Which potions earn their ingredients
Healing and stamina potions are used constantly and worth brewing in batches. Saviour-type potions matter because they let you save, which changes how boldly you can play. Utility potions - night vision, strength, charisma - are situational and worth brewing once you know where you need them rather than in bulk.
Ingredient supply
Herbs come from the world, from traders, and from drying what you gathered. Drying preserves them, which means a run of gathering can support brewing for hours. The efficient loop is to gather on the way between objectives and brew when you pass a bench, rather than making special trips.
Skill and quality
Alchemy skill affects the quality of what you produce, and higher quality means stronger effects and more doses. That makes early brewing a training exercise rather than a waste, even when you are producing weak potions.
The failure that hurts
Running out of a potion you need in the middle of a quest chain. The fix is boring: brew in quantities of five rather than one, and keep a stock of the three or four potions you actually use.
