Monster Hunter Wilds Traps: Shock, Pitfall and Capture

Traps are the most efficient item in the game and half the roster resists them. Which trap for which monster, and how capture works.

Traps convert a fight into a free window

A successful trap holds a monster in place for several seconds. In those seconds the whole party lands damage with no risk, and that window is usually worth more than any single weapon upgrade.

The skill is not placing traps, it is knowing which monsters accept them and when.

Shock trap versus pitfall trap

The shock trap activates quickly and holds a monster in a fixed position. It is the faster, more convenient option and the one most players default to.

The pitfall trap takes longer to trigger and holds the monster in a pit, which creates a longer window and a better opening for heavy attacks. It is slower to set up, which makes it the trap you place before the monster arrives rather than during a scramble.

Resistance is real

Some monsters are immune or highly resistant to one trap type, and elder-level monsters generally ignore traps altogether. Bringing only one trap type against a monster that resists it means bringing no traps.

The practical habit is to carry both. The item cost is small and the coverage is complete.

Traps and capture

Capture requires a trapped or otherwise immobilised monster plus tranquiliser application. The trap is the setup, the tranquiliser is the action.

Capture gives different rewards from a kill, and it ends the hunt earlier. It is usually the better choice when the target is nearly dead and the party is low on resources, and the worse choice when you need carve-only materials.

Traps as damage windows, not just capture tools

Even on a hunt you intend to kill, a trap in the middle of the fight is a free damage phase. Place it where the monster will walk, then bait the monster into it by standing on the far side.

Placing a trap directly under a charging monster rarely works. Placing it on the path the monster takes after it commits is reliable.

The cost of a failed trap

A monster that resists a trap destroys it. That is a wasted item and, more importantly, a wasted opening that the party was positioning for.

Announce the trap before placing it. A trap that nobody knows about is a trap that nobody uses.
