Monster Hunter Wilds Capture Not Working: Diagnostic Tree
Why your capture failed in Monster Hunter Wilds - monster not weak enough, wrong trap and tranq order, enrage, slay-only quests, or the monster fled.
Did the monster show a skull icon?
Capturing requires the monster to be weakened first. A skull icon on the map, limping, or returning to its nest all mean it is weak enough. If there is no skull, your traps and tranq will not take — go damage it more, then try again. This is the most common cause of “capture not working.”
Did you trap before it was weak?
Even with a trap down, a monster at full health will not be captured. The order is: weaken it (skull) → place Shock or Pitfall Trap → wait for it to be caught → then two Tranq Bombs (or Tranq Ammo). A trap placed on a healthy monster just gets stepped over.
Did you tranq before trapping?
Tranq only works on a trapped monster. If you threw tranq bombs while it was free, they did nothing and you wasted them. Trap first, tranq second.
Is it enraged or in last-stand?
A monster in its enrage state, or in the final “last stand” enrage before death, generally cannot be captured. Wait for the enrage to end (or the last-stand to pass) before attempting the trap.
Is the quest slay-only?
Some quests explicitly require a slay and do not allow capture — the capture prompt will not appear no matter what you do. Check the quest description; if it says slay, carve the body instead.
Did the monster flee the area?
If the monster left the locale (its area timer or a forced retreat), your trap is in an empty zone. Follow it to its new area and set up there. A successful capture replaces carves with extra target rewards — same materials plus a bonus — so it is worth getting right. The capture step is also exactly what gates High Rank unlock, where killing the Yian Kut-Ku instead of capturing it is the classic failure.
