Monster Hunter Wilds High Rank Unlock: The Real Steps
The High Rank unlock sequence in Monster Hunter Wilds - beat Zoh Shia, then capture a Yian Kut-Ku. Why guides contradict each other, and the soft caps.
The resolved sequence
- Defeat Zoh Shia, the final Low Rank story boss, in Chapter 3-5 (“Monster Hunter”). Killing him plays the credits but does NOT end Low Rank by itself.
- Talk to Nata at your Windward Plains Base Camp.
- Survey the Scarlet Forest and speak to Sassafrill, the Wudwud Chief.
- Capture a (High Rank) Yian Kut-Ku — and this is the trap. You must capture it, not kill it. Many players failed the unlock two or three times by slaying it instead.
- After the capture, High Rank unlocks and the monsters you meet in the wild become HR. So when one guide says “complete Chapter 4-1” and another says “beat Zoh Shia then capture Yian Kut-Ku,” they are describing the same path from different ends. The part that actually gates the unlock is step 4.
How to capture that Yian Kut-Ku
Wait until it is weak (a skull icon appears on the map, or it limps / returns to its nest), drop a Shock or Pitfall Trap, and once it is caught, hit it with two Tranq Bombs. If you are not sure you can pull that off, the capture-failure diagnostic walks through what went wrong.
HR soft caps
Hunter Rank is capped and lifted by story progress: the credits lift the cap to HR 8, completing Chapter 4-1 lifts it to HR 15, 4-2 to HR 20, 4-3 to HR 40, and the Chapter 6-1 Arkveld fight (reached at HR 40) removes the cap entirely (HR 999). At HR 15 you get “Investigating the Frenzied Shadow” (tempered monsters), and in Chapter 4-3 (around HR 21+) the “Wyvern Sparks and Rose Thorns” quest unlocks Elder Dragon hunts and Artian weapons — see the endgame economy guide. Once High Rank is open, story chapters no longer raise your HR — you must run Side Missions and Optional Quests. Before you dive into HR gear, brush up on combat basics so the difficulty jump does not catch you out.
