Insect Glaive Guide: Kinsect Buffs and Aerial Pressure

Insect Glaive lives or dies on buff uptime. How the three Kinsect extracts work, why red matters most, and when vaulting is a mistake.

The three extracts

Your Kinsect harvests extracts from monster body parts, and each colour does something different: red raises your attack, white improves your movement, orange contributes defence and knockback resistance. Collecting all three gives you the full buff state, which is where your damage and your survivability actually come from. Red is the one to prioritise. It comes from attacking parts — heads and aggressive limbs — and it is the difference between a Glaive that contributes and one that flutters around doing chip damage.

The extract loop is the weapon

Efficient Glaive play is a loop: send the Kinsect out while you are already moving toward the monster, harvest on the way in, then fight in the buffed state. The buffs expire, so re-harvesting is a constant background task, not a one-time setup. Players who treat the Kinsect as a novelty and fight unbuffed are the reason the weapon has a reputation for low damage.

Vault is not a dodge

The vault is mobility and access, not defence. Being in the air does not make you safe — plenty of attacks reach up, and a Glaive that spends the fight airborne is often losing damage while dodging nothing in particular. Use the vault to reach high parts, to reposition quickly, and to convert a downed monster into aerial damage. Do not use it to avoid learning ground spacing.

Offset Attack

The Insect Glaive is one of the six weapons with an Offset Attack, which gives it a structured answer to predictable physical attacks that most mobile weapons lack. It runs on a cooldown and builds resistance, so it is a read rather than a panic option.

Skills worth building

Skills that extend buff duration or improve Kinsect performance directly raise uptime. Because the weapon hits often, element and status both perform. Stamina skills matter for the aerial side but are secondary to keeping the red extract rolling.

Common failures

Fighting without extracts. Staying airborne because it looks cool. Ignoring the Kinsect entirely because it is not on the weapon. All three turn a strong weapon into a mediocre one, and all three are habits rather than knowledge gaps.

See the full roster in the weapon type overview, read weakness hitzones so your aerial hits land somewhere useful, and check Focus Mode and wounds for the Focus Strike timing.
