Gunlance Guide: Shelling, Stakes and Guard Windows
Gunlance mixes a lance and a cannon. How shelling ignores hitzones, why Wyrmstake placement decides your damage, and how Perfect Guard feeds Power Clashes.
Shelling is a separate damage channel
Your thrusts deal normal Sever damage against hitzones. Your shells deal their own damage on their own rules, largely independent of how hard the part is. That makes shelling the answer to armored heads, hardened hides, and any part where your pokes are getting poor returns. The mistake is choosing one channel. A Gunlance that only pokes is a bad Lance. A Gunlance that only shells runs out of ammo and sharpness. The weapon wants both, alternating based on what the target part is made of.
Wyrmstake is the payoff
The Wyrmstake Cannon plants a stake that deals damage over time on the part it hits. Placement is the skill: a stake in a part you are actually attacking, that stays there while the monster moves, is worth far more than a stake thrown at whatever was in front of you. Learning to plant it on a downed or trapped monster is the single biggest damage upgrade the weapon offers.
Guard, Perfect Guard, Power Clash
The Gunlance can guard, can Perfect Guard, and can trigger a Power Clash off a Perfect Guard. For a weapon with slow animations and a long reload cycle, that defensive layer is what makes the kit playable — you can sit in the pocket, block the answerable attack, and keep your position. Shelling also costs sharpness, so guard skills and sharpness management compete for the same slots. That tension is the Gunlance build problem in one sentence.
Shelling types change the gameplan
Different shelling types favour different ranges and rhythms — some reward charged shots, some reward wide bursts, some reward long-range pokes. The type on your chosen weapon determines which half of the kit you lean on, so picking a Gunlance is really picking a shelling style.
Skills worth building
Artillery-type skills that boost shelling damage scale the channel that ignores hitzones. Guard skills keep you alive in the pocket. Sharpness management matters more here than on almost any other weapon because shells eat it constantly.
