Hammer Guide: Head Damage and Stun Windows
The Hammer exists to hit heads. How charge levels change your approach, why its Offset Attack is real defence, and how stuns become free damage.
Charge levels and when to use them
Charging the Hammer moves you into higher charge levels, each with a different move and a different commitment. The short charge is your fast poke that keeps pressure without locking you in place. The full charge is a big committed swing that only makes sense when the head is not going anywhere. The practical skill is knowing which charge the situation allows. Charging to maximum every time looks impressive and gets you hit constantly. Moving while charged also matters — the Hammer can reposition during the charge, and hunters who forget that fight from a standstill.
Offset Attack is your defence
The Hammer is one of six weapons with an Offset Attack, and for a weapon with no shield this is the closest thing to a parry it gets. Time it as the monster’s physical attack lands and you stagger it backwards, which is both defence and setup. It runs on a cooldown and monsters build resistance, so it is a tool for the attacks you can predict, not a spam button. Do not confuse it with guarding. A mistimed offset means you take the hit.
Stun is a team resource
A stunned monster is a free window for everyone, not just you. That makes head hits valuable even when your personal damage on the head is lower than on a soft leg. Players who abandon the head because the tail has a better hitzone number are trading a solo damage stat for a team-wide opening, which is usually a losing trade.
Sharpness and bounce
Blunt weapons do not bounce the way blades do on hard parts, but the head of an armored monster can still be a poor target early. If you are bouncing or seeing weak numbers, you are probably hitting the wrong part of the head or the monster is enraged with hardened hide.
Skills worth building
Slugger increases stun potential, which directly increases your window count. Focus speeds charge time, which is throughput for this weapon the same way it is for the Great Sword. Anything that helps stamina also matters more than usual because charging and moving both cost it.
Common failures
Ignoring the head is the big one. The second is treating the Hammer as a slow weapon — it has real mobility while charged, and standing still to charge wastes that. The third is using the offset as panic defence; it rewards prediction and punishes reflex.
