Cursed Possessions: Exact Sanity Costs and Thresholds

Ouija charges 5/20/50% per question, the Music Box drains 2.6% a second within 3m and breaks at 1m. A broken item triggers a cursed hunt.

Cursed Possessions are the highest-risk tools in Phasmophobia, and most deaths tied to them come from players who did not know the exact cost before they used one. This page lists the verified sanity costs and break conditions for all seven possessions so you can decide whether the information is worth the price.

The shared rules

  • There are seven possessions: Haunted Mirror, Music Box, Ouija Board, Summoning Circle, Voodoo Doll, Tarot Cards, and Monkey Paw.
  • Most difficulties spawn one at random per contract; Training, Insanity, and the top Apocalypse tiers spawn none. Custom lets you set zero to seven.
  • Using any possession ends the setup phase for the whole team, as long as the front door is unlocked.
  • All sanity costs are paid by the player using the item, not the team average.

Per-possession costs

  • Music Box — while it plays, everyone within 3 metres loses 2.6% sanity per second. The ghost reacts when within 5 metres (Yokai 2.5m) and breaks the box at 1 metre (Yokai 0.5m), starting a cursed hunt with only 1 second of grace.
  • Ouija Board — each recognized question costs 5%, 20%, or 50% depending on the question. You must say “Goodbye” to end safely; if a question would take you to 0% sanity, the board breaks instead and the ghost hunts with 1 second of grace.
  • Haunted Mirror — 7.5% per second while you look, with a minimum 20% per use. It breaks at 0% sanity and hunts.
  • Summoning Circle — 16% per candle lit, five candles total, paid by everyone within 3 metres on that floor.
  • Voodoo Doll — 5% per pin, 10% for the heart pin. Pushing the heart or hitting 0% sanity triggers a cursed hunt.
  • Tarot Cards — the Moon sets sanity to 0%, the Sun to 100%, the Wheel of Fortune adds or removes 25%.
  • Monkey Paw — the sanity wish sets sanity to 50%; a weather wish costs 25%.

Why the thresholds matter

A broken possession is not just a lost tool — it is a cursed hunt, which ignores sanity, the setup phase, incense, and the usual post-hunt wait, and gives you only one second of grace. The cursed hunt page covers exactly what that means and the one item that can stop it. For the broader sanity economy, see sanity management, and remember that a possession that drops your sanity also pushes you toward the normal hunt threshold faster.
