Space Marine 2 Absolute Difficulty: What Changes

Absolute sits above Lethal and pays more, but it is not a new rule set. Why it plays like Lethal with no margin, and how to prepare for it.

What the patch notes do and do not say

What is published is the reward scale and the intended level. What is not published is a separate mechanic: there is no Absolute-only enemy, no Absolute-only rule about armour segments, no unique modifier list. Everything Lethal does — enraged Majoris, finishers that stop restoring armour when squadmates are far, limited ammo caches, a Mortal Wound on first incapacitation — is already in play below it. So the honest read is that Absolute is Lethal with the margin removed. Enemies hit harder, the same mistakes cost more, and the tolerance for a squad that is not communicating drops to roughly zero. That has a practical consequence for how you spend time. If you are farming gear, Absolute is a poor use of an evening: it pays more Requisition and XP per clear, but if you fail you get nothing, and the failure rate on a top tier is exactly where the payoff disappears. Farm on the highest difficulty you clear cleanly. Climb to Absolute when the goal is the clear itself — the challenge cosmetics, or the fact that you can.

What a squad needs before it goes

One of each class, agreed in advance. Class locking means you cannot resolve it in the lobby, and a squad rerolling at the last second starts the mission disorganised. The class overview is the shortlist. A dedicated answer to Extremis. On the top tiers the Extremis spawn is the encounter, not the horde. A shielded floating Zoanthrope pair that nobody can break is the standard way a good run dies. Resource discipline. Ammo is limited per member from Ruthless upward, so the player who fires at Minoris is the player who has nothing for the Terminus. Save heavy ammunition for elites and objective holds — that rule is worth more than any build. A protected carrier. The Gene-Seed is bonus XP for the whole squad and is destroyed if the carrier goes down, so on Absolute it goes to the most conservative player, not the best one. The Gene-Seed page explains the slot conflict with the self-revive relic.

Cosmetic goals

Clearing every Operation on Lethal unlocks a helmet reward, which is the tier most players chase. Absolute cosmetics exist for players who want the harder badge. Neither changes your power, so there is no progression argument for pushing Absolute early — only a skill argument. The difficulty table shows what each tier pays before you commit.
