STALKER 2 Survival Basics for New Stalkers

The first hours in STALKER 2 punish players who rush. The bolt-and-detector anomaly routine, emission survival, and stamina habits that keep you alive.

The anomaly routine

Anomalies are invisible death until you reveal them. Equip your detector and watch its signal accelerate as you near a field; throw a bolt ahead to trigger and expose the anomaly before you step in. Walk the revealed safe lanes. This single habit prevents most of the cheap, random deaths that frustrate new players, and it is also how you hunt artifacts safely (see the economy page for turning that into income).

Emissions

An emission is a lethal blowout that sweeps the Zone. When the warning sounds, get to a reinforced shelter, a building interior, or dense hard cover immediately — open ground is a death sentence. After the surge passes there is a golden window where anomaly fields spawn fresh artifacts; that is the best time to farm. Learn the rhythm of your local safe spots so you are never caught far from one.

Save discipline

The game autosaves at checkpoints, but they are spaced out. Manually save before entering a dangerous area, before a fight you cannot predict, and after any meaningful loot. If something goes wrong you want a recent restore, not a reload from an hour ago. This pairs with the save-and-reload discipline page on the specific cases where reloading cannot fix a softlock.

Stamina and movement

Sprinting drains stamina, and a drained stalker cannot dodge, sprint away, or steady a shot. Against mutants that control distance — Bloodsuckers and Chimeras especially — saved stamina is the difference between a clean side-step and a dead sprint into their bite. Reload only behind cover, and switch weapons before a mutant reaches you rather than fumbling a mag under pressure.

Health and weight

Carry bandages: Bleeds from Bloodsuckers and certain anomalies will quietly kill you if ignored. Medkits are for big damage, not minor bleeds. Watch your carry weight — overloaded, you move slower, tire faster, and become an easy target. Sell or stash what you do not need rather than hauling it everywhere.

Night versus day

Visibility and mutant behavior shift with the light. Night favors cloak ambushers and makes spotting threats harder; day makes long-range engagements and navigation safer but exposes you to more patrolling factions. Plan routes around both, and use the new binoculars (added in Update 2.0) to scout before committing to a firefight.
