STALKER 2 Factions: Who Runs the Zone
Around a dozen STALKER 2 factions you cannot join but can work with. Who they are, who is hostile, and how Cost of Hope turns Duty against Freedom.
The groups you will actually meet
- Loners (Free Stalkers) — independent individuals with no command structure. The neutral majority; good for trading and information.
- Bandits — criminals who rob and ambush. Constant low-level threat, but they drop loot worth taking.
- Duty — disciplined volunteer paramilitaries based in Rostok who believe the Zone is a cancer to be excised. They exterminate mutants and destroy anomalies.
- Freedom — anarchists who see the Zone as a gift to humanity and want it open to all. They clash constantly with Duty.
- Ward — the armed wing of SIRCAA, led by Colonel Korshunov. Best-equipped organized force in the Zone; enforces institute policy and protects its research. New to Heart of Chornobyl.
- Spark — survivors of the old Clear Sky faction, centered on Scar. They exist for retribution against Ward and SIRCAA and treat both as legitimate targets.
- SIRCAA — the government research body studying anomalies, run by Dr. Dalin. Where SIRCAA writes the objective, the Ward arrives to secure it.
- Noon — former Monolith members who woke from mind control, split between leaders Brodyaga and Faust, based at Wild Island. They collect radioactive and chemical waste.
- Monolith — fanatical worshippers of the Monolith at the Zone’s center, concentrated around Pripyat and the CNPP. Hostile to everyone, with no reputation path — only distance.
- Ecologists (Scientists) — research teams who pay well for artifacts and readings and hire stalkers for fieldwork. Generally non-aggressive.
- Mercenaries — contract soldiers who take any job that pays. Persistent threats because someone will eventually pay them to be one.
- Military — Ukrainian forces holding the perimeter and controlling who crosses in or out.
Reputation and consequences
Your accumulated standing colors how a faction’s people treat you in the run-up to missions, but it does not decide story outcomes — specific choices do that. Kill a faction member and relations turn red; complete their contracts and they warm to green. Mercenaries and Monolith have no real standing path. Those contracts are also where most reliable coupon income comes from, so building standing and filling your stash are the same loop — see earning coupons for the contract tiers and trader margins.
The Cost of Hope war
The expansion forces the series’ longest feud to a head. Duty and Freedom hold the Iron Forest together under an agreement called the D4 treaty, which collapses during the mission Distant Mirage. From that point the two groups are at war and you stand between them; the break happens at the X16 laboratory during The Destructive Power of the Mind, and your choice there — back Zulu (Duty) or Mavka (Freedom) — sets which side turns hostile. The version context page explains what Update 2.0 changed before that content lands.
