How to Play Iso in Valorant

Iso is a Duelist built entirely around winning one-on-one fights. His wall, bolt, shield, and ultimate all exist to isolate a single enemy and remove their advantages, which makes him a nightmare in isolated duels and a liability in chaotic team fights.

Iso’s Role: The Isolated Duelist

Iso’s job is to turn every fight into a fair 1v1 and then win it. Where Jett wins with mobility and Reyna wins with sustain, Iso wins by suppressing the enemy’s abilities and shielding himself. He suits confident fraggers who trust their aim. See our Valorant roles explained guide for how Duelists fit a team.

Iso’s Abilities Explained

Contingency (Basic)

200 credits · 1 charge · C

A wall of energy sent forward as a grounded object that can pass through terrain. It blocks vision and bullets, letting Iso cut a site or isolate an angle. Alt fire sends it at half speed for tighter control.

Undercut (Basic)

300 credits · 1 charge · Q

A molecular bolt that passes through terrain and inflicts anyone it hits with Vulnerable and Suppress. Suppressed enemies cannot use their abilities, which is devastating against agents like Jett or Omen who rely on them to escape.

Double Tap (Signature)

1 charge · free signature · E

An instant activation that grants Iso a shield making him invulnerable to all damage except the spike explosion, plus a flow state with faster reload. The shield lasts until it absorbs a single instance of damage, so it wins exactly one exchange — use it for the first duel, not the fallback.

Kill Contract (Ultimate)

7 ultimate points · X

Iso hurls a column of energy that catches the closest enemy and banishes both of them into an interdimensional arena for a 1v1 duel. If the target is carrying the spike, they are forced to drop it first. It is the most direct duel tool in the game.

One free shield, one 300-credit suppress

Iso’s kit splits cleanly by price. Double Tap is free and comes back every round, and because the shield absorbs exactly one instance of damage, its value is decided by when you press it rather than by how many you have. One shield per round is enough for the first duel; it is worth nothing in the second.

Undercut is the opposite kind of ability: 300 credits for a single charge, the priciest non-ultimate in the game. That cost only pays off against an agent who actually dies without their kit — a Jett who cannot dash, an Omen who cannot teleport — so firing it at a rifle-only enemy is burning 300 credits to apply a debuff nobody needed. Contingency at 200 is the one you buy on a budget, because a wall that blocks bullets does its job whether or not it hits anyone.

How to Play Iso: Force the 1v1

The best Iso players use Contingency to split the site so only one enemy can fight them, then Undercut to suppress whatever they are facing. Pop Double Tap as the fight starts so the shield eats the first bullet. Save Kill Contract for the enemy who is carrying the round — a duel that removes their best player wins it outright. If your aim is the bottleneck, our aim routine guide will help you actually win these duels.

Common Mistakes Iso Players Make

  • Casting Contingency where it blocks his own team’s angles.
  • Wasting Double Tap on a fight that never happens.
  • Using Undercut on an enemy who has no abilities worth suppressing.
  • Activating Kill Contract while standing in the open.

How to Counter Iso

Iso’s whole kit assumes a fair duel, so deny him one. Fight him with two players, since Double Tap only absorbs one instance of damage and Kill Contract only removes one enemy. Destroying his Contingency wall reopens the angle, and a suppressed Iso is just a rifle.

Iso rewards mechanics and confidence. Weigh him against other Duelists on the full agent roster before locking him in ranked.
